NYC Stop on the Coaches Tour
I had the pleasure (along with about 500 other UM fans) of meeting and then listening to Red, Coach B and Coach Hoke speak last night.
What a charismatic group of leaders we have running our three primary revenue sports, each more impressive than the next.
I had the special privilege of being the first person to notice Hoke walking into the restaurant and spent 5 uninterrupted minutes with him...WOW! It's no wonder the recruits are falling all over themselves to rush and commit. Hoke is engaging, earnest, humorous and focused all at once. It's been written before, but it bears repeating...he just "gets" it.
Now the only remaining question is whether he can coach or not.
I was there as well. Unfortunately those at the end of the line to greet coach Hoke were unable to do so, because he spent at least a minute with each person. Very personable.
Got to meet Belien and Berenson. Both were cool, though I can see where Berenson gets his name from. Dude was sunburned or something.
Interesting that they'll play Cornell at the Garden in a year or two and the basketball team will be in the 2012 preseason NIT.
The coaches ran off immediately after Q&A so that was a bit of a bummer.
they signed some stuff for kids. that was nice.
Whether or not Hoke can coach is a moot point. I'm hoping that Mattison and Borges can coach like crazy (pretty proven that they can). As long as Hoke isnt Andy Reid when it comes to clock management.... I like our situation
or Les Miles....
It's even more moot because Hoke can, actually, coach.
Let's have some dets on the event. As for clock management and management in general, I don't know of any complaints when he was at Ball State or San Diego St.
Event started at 7pm, though many of us lined up at 6:30 or so.
There was a meet and greet for an hour with Hoke being overwhelmed, Coach B, spending a lot of time with those around him (he actually left a vm for my daughter on her cell phone "Hey Hailey, this is Coach Beilein, I just wanted to congratulate you on graduating from 5th grade...keep up the good work and Go Blue!") and Red wandering around looking for people to talk with.
Brandon didn't attend (conflicting stories, he either had a board meeting for an outside business venture (the official story) or had a donor dinner in Boston (from the president of the NYC chapter)).
Each coach spoke for about 5-10 minutes, with Hoke leading the attendees in his team "greeting"..."Good Evening", "42" Championships, "132" years and "Ohio" (he really will not refer to them as Ohio State). It was ironic that as Coach Hoke was speaking, the TVs in the background were showing the Fickell press conference, I was standing right in front of Coach Hoke and watched his eyes stray upwards to the coverage of the press conference.
There was about 30 minutes of open mike Q&A and then the event was over at 9pm.
What is the best way to find out about events like these? I heard about this 45 minutes before it started.
I signed up to the Alumni Association but, does anyone have a link where I can make sure I am on the email list.
Thanks!
the President of the my local chapter...otherwise I doubt I would have known about it.
My friends sent me an email, otherwise I would not have heard. I'm assuming they were on some sort of email list.
I also want to add that at the beginning of the event they requested no video taping. Hopefully they did not also request this at the DC event, because there was a video here yesterday posted on mgoblog. It would be unfortunate if whomever posted that video did so after a request was made not to do so.

Somebody should be able to help you get on the list.
I think we just had a micro managing coach and that really didn't turn out so well. Although I was supportive of him. I believe the delegating style of Hoke will turn out fine. Half the battle is recruiting so he seems to know that much.
To be added to the email list of your local alumni club, send your name and email address to Cindy Zimmerman, [email protected]. Include the name of the club whose email DL you want to be added to. Thanks! I have now signed up for just about everything.
Much appreciated
