Meyer to replace Tressel? That would be an interesting day on the MGo board

Submitted by iawolve on

Not from me, from the Orlando Sentinel. I guess somebody needs to get out in front on this speculation.

"Now that Tennessee has fired Bruce Pearl, isn’t it only a matter of time before Jim Tressel resigns at Ohio State and former Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer takes over?

I am convinced of it.

Obviously Meyer wants to decompress, take some time off from coaching and spend some quality time with his family. And he will get a chance to do just that this season while the vultures circle Tressel at Ohio State. With Tennessee firing basketball coach Bruce Pearl on Monday for similar transgressions to Tressel’s, it’s inevitable that Ohio State will eventually pull the plug on Tressel, too.

Let’s face it, Tressel has lost all credibility and could face massive sanctions once the NCAA is done investigating his role in covering up violations by his players. If the NCAA hammer falls and the Buckeyes struggle this year (and you know they will with quarterback Terrelle Pryor and Tressel suspended for the first five games), the pressure will mount and Tressel will ultimately resign."

This argument just doesn't make very sense to me.  Why would Meyer want to go to OSU and why would they get rid of Tressel to bring in Meyer.  Just doesn't add up to me, but man, if they actually did this, wow.  We'd be in trouble

Um...I'd give it >50% chance they'll be looking for a new coach in 2012. The (overwhelming) NCAA precident on 10.1 violations would indicate that Tressel will be hit with a show-cause, which means the NCAA has decided he doesn't have the integrity to coach collegiate football.

Urban Meyer is a highly respected coach with experience at OSU and is from the area; he also happens to be without a head coaching job at the moment.

Hope this clears that up for you.

I think Tressel will hang around unti whatever NCAA ruling comes down and then he'll be toast.  But given how slow the NCAA moves, it probably won't be for another year.

At any rate, the Buckeyes have a very strange season of football coming up.

Urban Meyer will come back for one of three jobs: TSIO, Michigan,  or ND.  Since Michigan is back to the old boy network and ND has an authentic Irishman at the helm now, TSIO is the only job that will open anytime soon.  And Meyer would forget about his heart, his blood pressure, his hernia, his stomach, and anything else that ever hurt him to take one of those three jobs.

It's only a matter of time before Tressel is fired or "resigns."  I would be willing to bet that discussions are already underway between representatives of TSIO and Meyer discussing "hypothetical" situations.  It would be our worst nightmare, and it may very well happen.  And in five years, the same assholes who drove RR out of town will be bitching about why Michigan can't solve TSIO's spread.

There was recently a rumor on the Bucknuts board saying that Urban recently bought a house in Columbus and has been hanging around the OSU campus. The author of "The Boarding House" (a recurring rumor mill article that's posted daily) debunked this whole rumor saying that Urban has actually been out of the country with one of his daughters and has not bought a house inside Columbus and he doesn't even own property in the state of Ohio.

He also stated that the ND job is pretty much out of the question now with Kelly being there. The last bit that was posted on this rumor is that if there's any job he's interested in right now, it's Penn State in 2012.

This information wasn't coming in as speculation but instead from a very close source to Meyer. Obviously the source wasn't given but recent assistant coach hire, Stan Drayton, may know a thing or two.

Let me engage in crazy talk here.  Isn't it possible that Meyer is just plain done?  All reports show that he left for medical reasons.  He thought about it a year (or two?) ago and came back.  He got more medical advice this year and pulled the trigger.  Isn't it likely that his doctors told him that coaching was going to kill him and he decided to bail? He has a young family and doesn't really need the money.  He is lined up to make good bank as an analysist which probably involves flying to New York on Friday, talking football all Saturday, and being home for lunch on Sunday.  In the mean time, he can see his kids, do some charity work, work on the golf game and . . . oh yeah . . .  not die.

Or, he wants to move from Flordia to Colombus b/c he really likes cold weather, craves NCAA vioaltions, enjoys unrealistic expectations, and relishes fans that are so bad they drove their very own Golden Boy out of town.

The dude is done.  Wish him good health and leave it be.

This just in: I saw into the future and Kiffin will get fired as soon as USC is over their probation. Meyer will take the job in L.A. and will rule the PAC 12 until he goes to Seattle to replace Pete Carroll. Everyone remember you read it here first.
