"Rodrick Williams Jr.'s 10-month old, 2-foot-long savannah monitor named "Kill" gets the RB some strange looks when they go for walks together."
The lovely, the talented Alex Morgan got her first international career hat trick (4', 33', 72') en route to a 4-0 win over Sweden to take 3rd place in the Algarve Cup. Abby Wambach got her 134th international goal (36') on a header off a free kick. Nicole Barnhart made 7 saves to keep a clean sheet.
In April the USWNT will be in Japan, playing Japan on the 1st and Brazil on the 3rd.
About 1' into the highlight video (linked here, will embed below), see how far Alex runs to challenge for the ball, sent up the right side by Heather O'Reilly. The LCB gets to it first, but falls as Alex gets there. The RCB, who couldn't keep up with Alex from the center of the field, is again beaten as Alex gets to the loose ball and bends a 20-yd shot into the far side of goal.
Germany beat Japan 4-3 to win the Algarve Cup. They scored at 20' and 22'. Japan got on the scoreboard at 35' and equalized at 55'. Germany scored on a PK at 88', but Japan equalized at 90' (!). Germany won in the 92'. Highlight video link.
The U-20 WNT started slowly, but eventually scored 6 goals again. Goals were from Micaela Capelle (28'), Vanessa DiBernardo (45'), Julie Johnston (53'), two from Maya Hayes (59', 78'), and Samantha Mewis (69'). Having won Group B, next up is Mexico in the semis, F 3/9 @ 5PM ET on concacaf.com.
Highlight video link. Man, that Panama goalie is a sieve. If we hadn't started out slowly, we probably would have had a lot more than six.
Just letting everyone else know that the MGoBlog app for Android has been updated so that we can sign in and comment again.
P.S. I had nothing to do with creating the app. I just downloaded it and screamed with joy. I would suggest downloading it without the screaming though. Perhaps do a dance instead:
Unless you're in Mexico.
Game is on ESPN Would be nice to see UDM and coach McCallum make the Big Dance Worth watching just to check out UDM Soph guard Ray McCallum Jr. and Senior Chase Simons both will get a look from the NBA
It's halftime now, but Arsenal has put themselves in a position to pull off the unlikely comeback. After going down 4-0 in the first leg at the San Siro, Arsenal would have to score at least five in the second leg today--without conceding--to advance to the next round.
Well the Gunners have come out swinging, netting their first goal 5 or so minutes after kickoff. After 45 minutes of play, Arsenal is up 3-0 (down only 4-3 on aggregate). With Milan pressing to get the all-important away goal (which would change the complexion of the match), it has been a wide open affair, with the pace of the match slowed only by questionable officiating. Sets up nicely for a thrilling second half.
EDIT: Above stream may no longer be available.
That one has been a serviceable backup.
Haylie was named Pitcher of the Week today. She added 4 more wins to her stats. The most impressive wins were against #14 UCLA and #16 Auburn. She also picked up her first HR as a D1 hitter.
Congrats Haylie. We are so proud of you. Thanks for going Blue and we all look forward to 4 years together.
In the final game of group play in the Algarve Cup, the USWNT fell 1-0 to Japan on, of all things, a corner kick (Japan's only one) in the 84'.
Germany beat Sweden 4-0, so they'll play Japan for the Cup, we play Sweden for 3rd on Wednesday morning.
Highlights video (linked here, will embed below).
What looks to be an early US goal was waved off due to offsides. Also in the first half Alex Morgan gets a ball over the top, holds off her defender, and rips a shot off the post. In the second half there are a couple shots over the crossbar, and Morgan cuts inside of a slide tackle, but her shot goes wide left. I think it's sub Stephanie Cox who got beat on the goal. I'm rather annoyed that the shorter Japan scored on another corner against us.
The U-20 WNT rolled to a 6-0 win over Cuba Sunday afternoon. Katie Stengel (4', 36') and Maya Hayes (25', 29') scored two goals each, and Vanessa DiBernerdo (51') and Chi Ubogagu (84') finished the scoring.
Panama is up next Tuesday @ 7:30 PM ET on concacaf.com.
