Same offensive personnel…

Same offensive personnel they had in 2017. They had 10 starters back on offense yet fell dramatically in terms of scoring and total offense.

Franklin was propped up by…

Franklin was propped up by Moorhead, Gattis, Barkley, McSorley, Gesicki, Godwin, Hamilton. Without all the great coaches he hired and players he recruited he would be nothing! Oh wait that's his job.

Every player that is…

Every player that is transferring from PSU is leaving because their role was significantly diminished by the end of the season. Wade was not going to start next year. Neither was Juwan Johnson. Both had disappointing seasons and can see the writing on the wall with the young talent they have moving up the depth chart.

The post says "oh we beat…

The post says "oh we beat the B1G champs by 40" with no context whatsoever. Having 6 starters out and missing so many LB's to the point where they had to blow a freshman's redshirt in the middle of the game is an extraordinary disadvantage. O'Korn nearly beat out Speight for a starting job and was a 5th year senior with plenty of starting experience.

The offense for PSU had a new QB and completely new offensive system and it was only week 4. Go watch them in the beginning of the season and then by the end of the year and tell me that is the same offense. It isn't. It doesn't mean the win doesn't count but context is important. And that 49-10 game is the single biggest reason for the dismissive attitude towards Franklin the last couple years which is absurd.

You mean when PSU had 6…

You mean when PSU had 6 starters out on defense and multiple back up LB's on top of that? They were a terrible team at that point in the season. Offense hadn't started to click yet.

In general, head coaches get too much credit/blame at times. Harbaugh was successful his first 2 years cause he inherited a ton of talent from Hoke. He struggled last year cause he lost all of those players and the QB situation was a mess. Got too much praise the first 2 years and too much criticism last year.

Franklin struggled his first 2 years cause his team stunk and his QB was Hackenberg. They were young and had terrible depth. He's recruited well and eventually things started to get better. Giving all the credit to Moorhead is just lazy thinking and people trying to convince themselves that they won't sustain success.

How do you know they will be in trouble if

Moorhead leaves? Moorhead has been big for them but had he arrived a year earlier when Hackenberg was the QB and Gesicki was going through a slump do you think he would've had the same success? McSorley becoming the QB was a huge boost for them as well and he will be back next year. They have recruited extremely well on the offensive side of the ball. They have the #1 RB, #1 TE and #1 WR currently committed to them.

PSU's defense

isn't elite but it's not bad either. The numbers are misleading. They had a million injuries early in the season. They were missing 6 defensive starters against us. 4 starters in the front 7 alone against Pitt. Wisconsin had a defensive touchdown and another one set up by a turnover. The best weapon against them is to be able to throw the football effectively. Indiana had success throwing the ball, so did USC. People will point out the rushing yards they gave up to Pitt/Michigan but they were so depleted up front. Last year was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the defense even when healthy since they were replacing 3 elite d-lineman from the year before. So once all those guys went down it was a disaster early on.

They are not bad but DE is a question mark this year, as is depth at LB, CB. Will be top 5 D in the B1G if they stay healthy.

Did you watch the B1G title game?

Cause Godwin was like their 4th leading receiver. They have other weapons in the offense. Also, WR Juwan Johnson (high 4 star prospect) is getting a ton of pre-season buzz. He has supposedly had a great offseason and played extremely well in the spring game. Their offense will be fine, all of their concerns are on defense (DE, OLB, SS).

I agree trueblue

One game can definitely impact how fans feel about a particular team or player. The 49-10 game is rather meaningless given how much better they got by the end of the season and also other circumstances about that game.

First of all, they were missing 7 starters. WR Blacknall, DT Cothran, DE Schwan, LB Cabinda, LB Wartman, LB Bell, and CB Haley. Also, both back-up middle LB's didn't make it through the first half (one thrown out for targeting and then his replacement tears his ACL 5 minutes later). They had to burn a LB's redshirt in the middle of the game. That game was so easy for us offensively cause they were so depleted up front and they were already replacing a lot of guys in the front 7 coming into the season. We just ran the ball all day long and wore them down.

They were also in month 1 of a new offense and a new QB. Pretty young team vs. arguably the most experienced, oldest team in CFB last year on the road in their stadium.

I also don't think Barkley not running for many yards against us means anything for future match ups either. We've dominated them in the trenches the last 2 years. And he still made a number of big plays against us last year even with no help. I like our D-line heading into the season, but they will be better on the O-line, and we will not have the same depth.

I'm curious to see if they can build on last seasons momentum and how they handle heightened expectations, but nonetheless, this is an infinitely tougher match up than years past.
