Zeigler on Campus

Submitted by turbo cool on
So Trey Zeigler is on campus today and I hear that both staff and players (manny and peedi hosting) are pulling out all the stops for him. i know we have a really good shot at getting him but if anyone who's in a2 could provide some other info on the visit that'd be very much appreciated. go blue.

McCallum goes to Birmingham Country Day and Zeigler goes to Mount Pleasant, so neither are "in the D" with Zeigler being half the State away. Those critics won't shut up until Beilein is pulling Detroit PSL players like State does with Nix and Appling from Pershing, etc.

I watched him play when he was at my high school and I would say he has the tools to be a Manny-esque player. He has a very quick first step when driving and could get to the basket easily in the first quarter. When they switched up the defense to force him to the perimeter he still thrived by making quite a few threes. He is also good at rebounding. The one thing he can work on is his bulk but overall I think he is a very good prospect.

While Bielien is certainly unproven in the D, Izzo is definitely unproven in the D. He's been relatively unsuccesful in recruiting Detroit until recently....which I'm sure will change based on the whole Final Four thing. We've pulled down some great PSL recruits, which is especially amazing considering our recent mailaise on the bball court.....in any case, I hope that if Bielien continues to win, the PSL will be back in our hands. Detroit is waaaay to good of a city to give to the Spartans. It would be good to see him pull down McCallum and Trey.....although McCallum is unlikely, I think trey might be. Bielien should do whatever he can to pull some kids in from the PSL because I don't want them thinking that Michigan BBall is the bastion of Indiana white farm boys...Just Sayin. Keep recruiting the D

Does anybody have a list of the schools that do recruit the Detriot PSL well? What would constitute recruiting the D well? Jordan Morgan is from the D as far as I know, if not, certainly from Detroit area. Belien is interested in Kearney from the PSL, also Brundidge is from Southfield, which borders on the D, and then there is Amir Williams who may or may not live in Detroit but attends school at Country Day.

Yes I know, but they do recruit Detroit and end up with players who would have been in the PSL, Chris Weber for one. I do not have data to support my assertions of recruiting Detroit but I know it goes on just like at OLSM and other private schools.

we got Darius Morris so I think Zeigler is easily the top priority. McCallum would be nice but he probably wouldn't shoot up the depth chart like Zeigler could. Zeigler could be well complemented with Morris, Vogrich, Smotty and some other dude. Can't say I'm that optimistic about Cronin/Morgan/McLimans starting in the future - I'm sure Beilein will develop their skills but none of them are going to be double-digit scorers. Hopefully one of them can at least develop into a shot blocking badass. I wouldn't be surprised if Beilein is able to start a fire in Morgan whose the most athletically gifted, supposedly, but also the laziest.

I'm talking about the institution that is the Detroit Public School League (The PSL). The PSL produces some of the top players in the country, past and present. I guess there isn't one school that dominates the league, as out of state teams (Memphis, Mizzou, 'Cuse, Oregon) have all taken great players out of our grasp. Country Day (Birmingham), Southfield are not in Detroit..although they are Detroit area. UofD is definitely not a PSL caliber team, even though they are on 7 mile.

The biggest obstacle is convincing top level players that UM is for real and they are the critical building blocks in rebuilding the team. I am not sure if many of these elite kids want to play for a team rebuilding but, instead, would rather opt for an already established power house. Though, if there is one coach to play for in a rebuilding type of atmosphere, it's John Beilein. Trey has been quoted in the past that he was impressed with what JB has done. Hopefully his talks with Simms and Manny have been fruitful in fortifying how wonderful a coach JB is and reinforcing how the program is on the right track.
