What Is UM's Approach to Recruiting the Secondary for 2010?

Submitted by michiganfootballblog on
I've been wondering about this lately. Our class is filling up relatively quickly this year, and we could definitely use one or two more kids in the secondary. It seems that there is a lot of interest from many kids. Brandon Ifill, Tony Jefferson, Cullen Christian, Sean Parker, Rashad Knight, Tony Grimes, and Dior Mathis have either recently confirmed they are taking an official to Michigan or expressed serious interest. Spencer Boyd decides on Friday. Is the thinking take the first two that commit? If so, I wonder how this plays into certain kid's minds, for example, Cullen Christian. He's been strong Blue throughout but has recently said he's going to take all five officials. See http://tiny.cc/mu1km. Will there be a spot left for him? What do people think?

We'll have a spot for Cullen. Have Knight and Ifill said when they will announce? And does this mean Cullen won't announce for months?

spend all of the entire fall talking about defensive backs and then get 2 or 3 of the above mentioned guys. Isn't that really all that is left for this class? Maybe wait for the Henderson announcement...

Our defense doesn't require very many huge dLinemen. However, it does require tough and athletic linebackers and you have to go back a couple years to find a 4* linebacker that we signed. True, our depth on the line and in the secondary needs to improve (and will) but where we truly lack elite prospects for the future is at linebacker. If Demens, Fitzgerald, Isiah Bell and Antonio Kinard turn out to be awesome then great, but who knows what will happen with any of them?

We have 16 commits now and we still need OL and defense. How many are we going to take? We should get some more OL, a few DT/DE, 2 CB, and a safety. But I don't think we can take around 24 players. Are any DT's even looking at Michigan? I looked at Brian's recruiting board and no one on there is serious about us. And is Travis Williams the guy who wanted to commit but we haven't let him yet because we want to see if we can get better players?

what the scholarship count will be but you are right, we need some more depth in a lot of positions. I would like to get Cullen and Mathias, though I guess he is an ND lean now.

Mathis a ND lean? I thought Oregon and MSU were his top two? DT depth is scary. I'm sure we'll get someone this year, but I don't think anyone great (definitely not Campbell/Martin ratings). We have to get a bunch of DTs next year. Martin will be a Sr if he stays, Campbell will be a Jr, whoever else we have will be a sophmore and probably will not be a great DT. Is there any way we move a DE to DT?

Stop freaking out on DT recruiting. With our defense being more a 3-4 look, we'll only need one DT on the field majority of the time. I'd prefer that the coaches not take a flier on a prospect that needs alot of work and is a major project. That's why I'm not worried about us not offering Hankins because the kid needs alot of work and conditioning. As I've said before, we'll be in a good position to land Sharrif Floyd if we have a respectable season.

Yeah, our scholarship count is looking iffy. I'm expecting us to pursue the following: OT (Henderson or Schofner) OG (Torrian Wilson) 2 CBs (Christian + Mathis or Grimes) S (Knight or Sean Parker) LB (who knows here...) DT (looks like Floyd or bust at this point) That would put us at 23 scholarships for this class; according to Brian's depth chart by class, we can take about 18. Should be interesting to see how the numbers all work out.

Fucks Shit Up. But I agree, Cullen seems to be the preferred target. I guess people continually discuss it because Mathis is in state and we are jockeying for position with MSU...but he seems like an afterthought at this point to me.

Paraphrased general mgoboard sentiment: Because we need CBs and he's an instate CB 4* from Cass Tech that no one wants to see at MSU. However, I feel like I've read a lot that says he's a better slot WR than CB and that he's not performing that well at camps. I think if he pulls a Lo Wood and drops to 3* (unlikely) the people on this board will suddenly claim MSU can have him because we never wanted him anyway. My guess is he ends up at State. Hell of a nice offer list though.

...the Coner, Wright, and Sheridan probably won't get 2010 scholarships. Also, according to GBMW, don't be surprised if two slot receivers leave the team (although, in their inimitable style, they won't tell you who, but you can read through their spring comments to figure out who they mean). I would say if room is needed, Feagin and Kelvin Grady could get the squeeze. Just E-pinion.

GBMW says look at their spring comments to know who they think might leave. They then list the four slots that were on the roster in the spring: Odoms, Roundtree, T-Rob, and Feagin. Odoms is the returning starter. Roundtree emerged at the spring game as a potential favorite target for Tate. Feagin didn't play much (if at all) in the spring and T-Rob received less than stellar reviews. So....

You can say that about any Soph or Junior that has been passed by younger players. Hell, based on the Forcier's family history, I can say the same thing about Tate. Any player transferring doesn't shock me at this point.

That's not a bad point, now that Hemingway won't be leaving before him and with a lot of talent behind him pushing for PT, if he doesn't perform well this year, he would be a candidate for transfer. That said, I think he will perform well enough that he decides to stay.

How about I just list every sophomore on offense and that way I can claim I called it if it happens? Edit: Can we also stop treating every player like they are a whining pri-madonna that will leave when things get rough? It's ridiculous.

Dude, chill. It doesn't matter who we agree or disagree with. I think it's possible that Lloyd's rumored health concerns probably wore him down in his last couple of years, but, as far as the Xs & Os part of coaching, I don't think the game had passed him by. (PS: My above post was just an attempt at humor to lighten the mood a bit. It seems to have failed.)

I admit that I'm a bit (over)sensitive to criticism of Lloyd and the previous coaching staff at times. I just find it very dickbaggish when certain posters continue to suggest that Lloyd was a bad coach who was at fault for last season's disaster. It's even more dickbaggish when a certain poster tried to imply that Lloyd was somehow forced out of his job, which we all know is complete and utter BS.

I don't know if people here use the Stylish Addon for Firefox, but if you do, here is a style that will increase the size of the content boxes: @namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml); @-moz-document domain("mgoblog.com") { #banner, #container, #headercontainer, #header-region-container, #footer-region-container, #suckerfish-container { width: 1250px !important ; } #page-right, #round-right { width: 1274px !important; } #sidebar-left { width: 180px !important; } #sidebar-right { width: 210px !important; } #sidebar-outside { width: 0px !important; } #inside-content { width: 1250px !important; } #mainContent { width: 840px !important; padding-left: 10px !important; padding-right: 10px !important; } #round-container { width: 912px !important; } }

Why on earth would they "squeeze" Feagin out? They don't just "squeeze" juniors off the roster. Kelvin is a walk on for now, so I can't remember if everyone assumes that he will be on scholly for 2010. Just hold tight, there is sure to be some attrition, guys that don't see playing time and head to greener pastures or folks that fizzle out on football entirely.

Brian's scholarship count is assuming that those 3 guys don't get a 5th year scholarship. GBMW website has interesting perspective and analysis on Michigan football team, but I ignore some of the stuff they write. They read way too much into simple observations (e.g. some player took off on a play, he must not be happy on the team and will prolly transfer) Kelvin Grady is a one year deal; if he does really well, he'll get a a scholarship. Feagin will be interesting to see; not sure how much PT he'll get. Obviously his try at QB didn't pan out at all.
