Tate's Preparation

Submitted by Ziff72 on
My buddy has commented to me twice now that he heard that Forcier has never lifted weights. I have told him until I hear it Tate himself I will not believe it. Has anyone heard this or in working with high school teams find this in anyway believable?? He didn't lift with his team?? His personal trainer was Marv Marinovich....that guys nuts. He has 2 older brothers in college programs they never mentioned it to him?? It seems nuts any thoughts??

a) I have heard this elsewhere. I believe it came from someone on the coaching staff, so I think there's some validity to it. b) Yes, believe it or not, you can go through a high school program without lifting weights. I'm sure this doesn't mean he's never picked up a dumbell or something, but there's a difference between doing a few biceps curls every once in a while and participating in a weightlifting program. Multi-sport athletes don't have much time to lift weights (I'm not sure if Forcier played other sports, but this might apply to him). Off-season weightlifting programs cannot be mandatory, so coaches can't force players to be there. When I was in high school, I played with a guy who was getting attention from all over the country (Michigan included). It turned out he was really stupid and never played a down of college ball. But he was 6'4", 245 lbs. and ran a (possibly fake) 40 time of 4.6. He was a MLB and a FB. I never saw him lift weights at all. He just goofed around or sat in the weight room all the time. He had no work ethic whatsoever. Many teams don't lift weights during the season because it cuts into practice time and, really, most of your strength gains are going to come in the off-season. So when teams can actually require that a guy lifts weights, they choose to be out on the field instead.

The only reason Tate would lift is to possibly help break tackles at the line. There's a ton of MLB pitchers whose arms look like a noodle but they throw 95mph. As long as he gets plenty of throwing reps in at practice and runs with the team, I see no reason why this would be a bad thing. This might even help him be more nimble and just a hair quicker without the extra 10-15 lbs he might gain from lifting.

Weight training will help Tate get faster and stronger and improve the velocity of his arm... there is no downside. That is why EVERYONE is training with Barwis even the kickers. Golfers are lifting weights, it is unimagineable that anyone serious about athletics is not doing something to improve their body in this day and age. I was in a mediocre high school football program back in the 80's and we had a mandatory weight program. With all the emphasis now on roids and strength training, stretching, core exercises etc...it just shocked me. This is not some poor kid from Pahokee that doesn't have access to much, he has a personal trainer. What did they think they were getting ready for???
