Spring Michigan QB Rundown w/ Link to Maize N Brew/resemblance of 20 year old Harbaugh and Speight

Submitted by benjamint1024 on

I liked the write up.  States mostly obvious things.  I'm sure some of you have already read this.  Slow news.

Main reason for post:  Pay special attention to the links in the article that go to pictures of JH and Wilton Speight.  The resemblance is uncanny.  I would have posted the pictures myself, but they stated in the article that they did not for copyright reasons.  If its okay with the board, sombody post them.

Shane's biggest strength (his arm) is also a major weakness. Instead of putting appropriate touch on the ball to increase the chance that any given throw will be a completion, he tries taking guys' heads off on every throw. He missed a gimme 7-yard TD to Gallon in the bowl game against K-State for this very reason. When you're watching him, it feels like he's more concerned with showing off his arm strength than making a completion. Like "Hey, if I hit you in the numbers and you didn't catch it, that's not MY problem." That's not as easy of a thing to correct as it may sound, since it says a lot about a guy's mental state and priorities. I expect Speight to be the starter on day 1, and Malzone to takeover at some point during the season (unless by some miracle Speight never loses a game or never struggles). I do not think we'll see Shane at the top of the Michigan depth chart at any point.

Arm strength usually is an asset. It takes time to learn to take some heat off the ball. I'd bet in the beginning, it's a bit awkward throwing differently like that. Think of the Tigers basically losing the (2006?) World Series on a couple gimme throws because they thought about making it TOO easy it seemed. I really don't think Morris' problem is that he's too arrogant to dial it back.

I don't have faith in any particular guy, but you'd think with all the options they have, the winner will be serviceable.

Also, some are talking about Speight being Harbaugh's guy, but just from what people say, Malzone seems more like the "gamer" who makes plays that Harbaugh wants. Also, Harbaugh isn't looking for Denard speed at the QB position, but he still likes mobility back there. Does Speight have any?

I've met Shane on 3 occasions & he's very polite and respectful not arrogant. The other guys kind of tease him, seemingly good naturedly, & he takes it good naturedly. Seems like they're having fun. They were short interactions & I don't know what the dynamic really is though.
