So, basically we're right where we thought we would be

Submitted by maizenbluedevil on

At the beginning of the year, most of us predicted 7-5

Most of us also predicted losses to Wisc. and OSU to finish the season.

Meaning most of us thought we'd be 7-3 at this point in the year.

For all the drama, all the weeping and gnashing of teeth, all the calling for RR's head, right now we're exactly where most of us thought we would be at this point.

Just pointing that out.

Also, fun fact:  We are 3-0 in the state of Indiana this year.

While we have won 7, we still have a good chance at 8.  We should be able to compete with Wisconsin next week.  But as we learned today it will depend on the weather.  Can we get another 70 degree day in November next Saturday?

That was a little too much, but at the same time, Wisconsin had a running back making his first career start today in place of Clay and Tolzien only threw for 3 TDs which wouldn't be what I would expect in a massacre.

In the 4th quarter, UW was making some attempt at stopping the scoring.  But, the UW 2nd stringer threw for a 74 yd touchdown (blown coverage??  or a deep ball??), an Indiana pass was intercepted for a touchdown, and so they tossed in the UW 3rd stringer who managed a 17-yd QB keeper for a TD up the middle when Indiana should have been stacked against the run.

So Indiana wasn't doing much to stop it either...maybe their 2nd string was in, too.  UW could have started kneeling every down starting mid-way through the 3rd quarter and they still would have scored on Indiana.

If you asked me in the beginning of the year what are record will be in Woolfolk and Floyd would be out for this long and that Martin and Mouton would also miss a game, I would have said 6-6 at best.

So, I'm definitely happy with 7-3 right now.

As mentioned, this is about where expectations were for this team.  Of course, that won't satisfy the critics who will complain about the failure to beat Team X or Team Y, the 3 year Big Ten record, yada, yada, yada.  Please ignore those people...

Hell - yeah!  Take that, Hoosier state.

Anyway yes I predicted 7-5 like a lot of people.  Maybe we can somehow steal a win in one of the next 2 games, that'd be nice.

In any event, 7-5, bowl game, things are looking up a bit, even though this was an ugly win.

Just tell the offense to hang onto the ball and we'll be OK.

It's not just the record, it's the way they play.  Michigan hasn't shown they can play with teams from the top half of the Big Ten like MSU, Iowa, and apparently PSU.

My dream is that Michigan's offense is competitive against against either Wisconsin or OSU but I don't think it's likely.

I wasn't aware Denard was the only one able to get yards or points for our offense. You sound like a troll to suggest putting up 28 points against one of the best defenses in the nation is a bad thing. Let me guess, next you will say Iowa was taking it easy on us and that is why we put up 550 yards, right? Never mind we were one score down with 8 minutes to go in the game, they were taking it easy, right? Must have been the 2nd string defense, right? Did you just cut and paste your last post from a freep or Mlive board?

Iowa's defense played drastically differently after blowing Michigan out in the first half.  Similarly, Michigan played drastically differently on offense when they were trailing big and Denard went out with injury.  The simple fact is that against non-Indiana Big Ten opponents, Michigan's supposedly powerful offense has one impressive performance: against Illinois, a team that will finish in the middle of the conference.

I didn't think Michigan would finish in the top half of the Big Ten.  But I did think that their offense would give more than one good Big Ten defense trouble.  That hasn't been the case.

We have one of the top 15 offenses in the nation and we have 2 games left. How does that equal "our offense isn't good?" Should we wait until after the year and we have one of the top offenses in the nation so you can say "yeah, but it really wasn't that good because I say it wasn't."

Even though it was a pitiful Purdue offense, the defense showed real improvement today.  (Yes, I know the opposing offense was putrid).  To see Avery, Demens, Cam, and Vinopal flying to the ball and making tackles thrilled my maize and blue heart.  Sometimes a game like this can spark young players and give them confidence to do the same against better competition.

I know the cynical/rational person will say that the defense is going to be humiliated next week against UW, but I say there's a reason they toss the ball onto the field.  Is it too much to hope for a passable defensive performance next week?  Here's to hoping.  In the meantime, great win MIchigan D!

It's college football. Almost anything can happen from week to week considering NW beat Iowa and Minnesota beat Illinois in Champaign. Enjoy the ride is all I can really say at this point.
