SB finishes Tourney with a Win

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

Team 40 finshed the weekend with a win over St John's 12-2, in mercy-rule fashion. However, the start of the season was less than ideal, going 3-2 for the Tourney.  The pitching this weekend certainly needs to improve.  The pitching staff allowed 22 base on balls in 5 games. This is unacceptable considering we played the likes of Delaware and St Johns.

Today, the pitching duties were split between Tera Blanco and Leah Crockett.  Tera picked up the win by pitching 3 innings, giving up no runs and 2 hits.  She struck out 1 and walked 3. Leah pitched the remaining 2 innings, giving up 2 runs, both earned, on 6 hits.  She also had 1 strike out and 3 BB.

The offense was lead by Kelly Christner who went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.  So. Natalie Peters, So. Faith Canfield, Jr. Aidan Falk, and So. Alex Sobczak,  finished with 2 hits each.

Next weekend the team travels to Raleigh N.C. for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and willl play NC State and Notre Dame twice.  This will be a fun tourney for the ladies.

The two games against NC State will both be on ESPN3.

NC State is 2-3, with losses to Troy, #23 FAU and MSU. So they're not good.

#22 Notre Dame went 3-1 against mid majors this weekend, their loss coming to Long Beach State.

Eh. We're not a true blue blood program but I'm not sure that I agree men's basketball doesn't have a tradition of excellence. Mens hoops has won as many national championships and been to more national championship games (4 vs 2) than softball if you compare both during the period since Hutchins took over. In a sport with 10 times the depth of quality competition and parity than softball has. That's not a knock on the softball program which is fantastic, but I think you might be selling the history of the basketball program short because your fandom coincides with a lot of the dark years.

Good to see the team put together a strong finish to the weekend, even if it's agaisnt weak competition.  This is the sort of game where it would be easy to come out flat, win 3-1 or something like that, and get out of there.  They came out with an attack mentality, though, hitting through the order & putting up crooked numbers in every single inning.  That shows some mental toughness.  Excited to see this team get back at it, hoping to see continued improvement week by week.
