Sam Webb: McDowell likely not coming to M

Submitted by Bodogblog on

Yes, duh for everybody in that mood.  But there was talk in the last few weeks from several sources that Malik McDowell may be leaning toward Michigan.  Sam Webb was one of those, and recently had been saying if something happened before April 1, it would probably be Michigan.

Alas, today is April 1.  In his update Webb indicated that he talked to moms, and McDowell will likely be attending Sparty, even if he was to walk-on.  Ira insisted he couldn't get a scholarship until he's 21, Webb says there are things they can do with a Big 10 tender or financial aid, but didn't really want to get into it.  Upshot is that he likely won't be coming to Michigan.  The M coaches set an April 1 deadline, and wouldn't pursue this beyond that, so it appears to have come and gone.

On a personal note, Webb said he wouldn't be shocked if the mother relented and signed the loi, even though she still does not want her son there.  Hopefully that all gets worked out, wish the kid and the family the best.

In other news, Florida OT Jake Fruhmorgen really liked his weekend visit, seemingly much more than Ohio State.  Got along great with the coaches.  Clemson still seems the leader, M may have a chance if he comes for another visit in the next few weeks before deciding.  Grant Newsome from New Jersey is the other likely OT prospect.

IL PG prospect Jalen Brunson, per his dad, did not mean to flip off the crowd in a recent game.  He was waving his arms in frustration, photograph caught his hands at the top.  He appears to really like both Michigan and Sparty.  Articles forthcoming on gobluewolverine.com

I met Bo when I was eight years old and he recruited a future 1st team all big ten tackle that played for my Dad. I asked Bo if I could play for him and he said "only if I minded my parents". I believe Bo would have never taken a kid whose parents did not support the decision.

Hey guys. Normally I wouldn't bother coming over here and making an account to correct something.... However...  there is a lot of misinformation going around about the situation.  I am disappointed that Webb didn't explain it accurately, but that could simply be due to a lack of research on his part.

McDowell can sign a Big Ten tender instead of a NLI if  his father signs it as well. (NLI requires custodial parent but the Big Ten tender does not)

If McDowell and his father signed a Big Ten tender then he would only be able to go to a school outside the conference if he wished to switch schools before starting classes. Once he starts classes he becomes a student athlete and normal rules apply to transfers.

Really only posting because I believe accuracy is important and I do not believe the media that has been keeping you guys informed has given you an accurate picture of the situation.  I will give them the benefit of the doubt of how much McDowell and family were interested in UM, but No one that I consider credibile had Malik wavering at all.

Here is an article from Rexrode in February about McDowell's options which is very informative.

This was Webb's doing.  He keep this thing alive, made Malik's family story a national story, and ruined what should have been one of the best times of Malik's life.  That can't be undone.

Shame on you Sam Webb.
