Promotion Madness

So it's down time. A fine time to bring up a minor observation. Watching the College Football All Star whateva thingy, Desmond Howard's glorious visage graced the targets for a QB drill, replete with the adornments of a Wolverine champion with his arms outstretched, awaiting his oncoming prize. I have been becoming increasingly aware of how well the university has been promoting itself through these subtle methods. UM gets its name dropped in numerous television shows, movies, and such. This is, I think, deliberate and paid for out of the AD budget and I think it is just brilliant. This could pay major dividends in the long-run with recruiting, by building a positive image of the university and a common cultural awareness of it. Anyone else notice this pervasive subterfuge marketing? Thoughts?

yeah, i definitely have. Are you sure that's being paid for though? I mean at least for the stuff like our name dropped in Weeds and Entourage, I don't know if I picture our athletic department paying for that

Well I have no proof so, no, not sure Just seems likely. The incidence of M getting name-dropped all over pop culture has increased markedly, and is correlated with the AD budget finally getting in the green (thanks to Bill) and the very lucrative Adidas contract. The other possibility, and not unlikely, is that the widespread and loyal alumni network has infiltrated Hollywood and beyond, and has begun an unofficial campaign of spectacularly subversive Wolverine love. But I am thinking it is more likely that M pays to have endorsements planted in scripts and such. Same principle as product placement in films. Either way, it gets me all fired up in me jiggly parts.

I can't imagine the AD pays for it. My guess is a Michigan alum working on the shows. Is it Uncle Buck where the band plays the victors in a parade? I love seeing that kind of stuff. Entourage, Lost, The Breakup, Dumb and Dumber, Sopranos, to name a few. Go Blue!
