OT: USA v Jamaica Gold Cup Open Thread
Gold cup quarters= win or go home.
USA lineup: Howard; Cherundolo, Goodson, Bocanegra, Lichaj; Jones, Bradley; Bedoya, Kljestan, Dempsey; Altidore
Subs: Edu, Agudelo, Donovan, Bornstein, Ream, Adu, Hahnemann
I don't like that Landon isn't starting. I'm not sure if this is a time for experimenting. The game is on FSC at 3pm ET or on feed on concacaf website
EDIT: Landon was at a wedding and got in late.. hence the no start. Thanks for the update.
...in groups now.
Close with the bicycle after Sasha almost beats GK with bouncing ball.
Now Sasha puts in a nice cross for Bedoya to head just wide.
He's having his best game for the US in quite a while. Playing faster than he used to.
Sacha's service on corner's has been dreadful and he has been non-existent with the exception of a couple of attacking moves. I'd take him off at the half.
I disagree about the corners. He's put the ball right where the sets seem to ask him to. The corner that preceded Dempsey's bike was particularly good, that's a set play to head the ball back across the six.
..."Ach, Mensch" to himself.
..."Ach, Mensch" to himself.
...double post.
Habia una "poste doble." No es bueno.
lol, if you need classes let me know, Ahhh, terribles posteos dobles!!, los odio!!! , that'd be better =)
Espanol de la escuela secondaria no es suficiente para hablar ni escribir en una manera good.
Eso es que recuerdo: Maria trabaja en la biblioteca, y Pedro come una hamburguesa. Es todo.
tan malo.
And he fires the left footed shot off his right knee.
Momentum clearly with the States at the moment.
They've gotta score soon. RIght?
here toward the end of the first half!
Jamaica is hoping to get this to the half. They're struggling to slow the US running through midfield.
Is there local radio for this? (ann arbor)
watch it on your computer. Nice stream.
...signals the start of play for the second half.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Jones (???) on the deflection off the defender
GET THE **** IN JERMAINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a tremendously fortunate deflection.
Goal- Jermaine Jones off a deflection.
U.S 1-0
I hate seeing one of our own players go down with so much unnecessary drama. You got hit on the nose - there's no reason to collapse to the ground.
I like to think we're above that bullshit. Nice goal though.
...are Landon Donovan, Freddy Adu, Tim Ream, Jonathan Bornstein and Maurice Edu. Who will be sub #2?
I can see Bradley going defensive way too early with the lead, yet again, and taking off Dempsey for Edu and pushing his kid further forward in attack.
EDIT: I'm happy to be wrong, as it appears Landon is being brought on. We need to keep attacking against Jamaica.
DOWN IN FRONT
...coming on next.
that stadium. Agudello--on a more pertinent note--looking sharp.
Dive-ola; glad we didn't score on that. Who is that, Lalas: "You know what? That wasn't even close. . ."
Verlander. Damn is he good.
Straight Red there, no question about it.
C-Ya! Jamaica down to 10 men.
Jamaican dude pulled down Jones... kinda.
Lord I hate flopping.
Though it works in our favor, that was bullshit. I'm surprised the Jamaican player put up no fight.
Despite his goal, I'm left with a sour opinion of Jones - given the phantom red card plus his flop on the nose hit.
....and Taylor picks up the red. No contact, but Taylor made no complaint.
Sub time
Not sure if the dishonesty by Jones was worse or the decision making. If he doesn't go down and runs in four on nothing its got to be an 80% chance of scoring, much more important than a one-man advantage well into the second half. So it was dumb as well as bullshittey.
Didn't look offside to me... but what do I know
The rule is one defender plus the keeper, he was past the keeper which makes it offside. The linesman got it correct. Whoever Donovan dropped it to should have teed it up from outside the box.
The replay looked offside by kind of a lot.
Was that an offside trap involving the goalie?
Yes when the goalie came out he became the forward defender despite the fact that someone dropped back to goal. It appeared to be the right call. Saw that in the world cup too.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Dempsey
Good goal there. USA got this.
Dempsey makes it 2-0 U.S. on a very composed goal. He is having a great game today.
People love to build up Donovan, but Dempsey has been more important to the success of this team over the last several years than Donovan has.
Dempsey has to be he best US attack player ever. Who else has established themselves as a premier goal scorer for a team in one of the top couple of leagues in the world? For all Donovan's success, he was never able to do that in a few tries in Germany. His last loan spell at Everton looked promising for the first time, but sadly it looks like he'll never get another opportunity to prove that he can do it at the highest level.
Brian McBride was a fantastic attack player for the U.S., but he was more of a pure striker and finisher, where as; Dempsey is more of a creative player that comes out of the attacking midfield.
Bert Patenaude.
aherm.
The jersey exchange in soccer is one of the neatest things in sports.
"In these international tournaments, [advancing] is what it's all about."
Interesting. I suppose that's unique to international tournaments.
Final score- U.S 2-0.
Night and day difference in quality of play from the U.S side when compared to the Guadaloupe game.
Have a great Father's Day everyone!
