OT: Travel Help - Guide To Munich
Way OT: I am traveling to Munich for work in June. It will be my first time Munich and I will be there for a week.
I was hoping the board could steer me in the right direction on restaurants/pubs to check out or any other cool things to do/quick sites to see when not at the office?
Thanks in advance.
so she could kick around a soccer ball for a while as we drove from France to Denmark two summers ago. They have a wave machine in the river and you can watch people surf there, which is kind of a kick. The New Town Hall (Rathaus) is impressive, and you can stop and have a drink or some food in its cafeteria, carry them into the courtyard if you like. (Now you're making me remember that I left my camera there and spent a tense fifteen minutes until I found it!) The square and pedestrian area around town hall, the Marienplatz, is famous and beautiful and full of shops, which my wife and daughter liked.
The highlight for me was a wildly tasty lunch at the Augustiner Beer Hall (they have three venues--the one closest to Marienplatz and the Altstadt is called Zum Augustiner). Food, beer, absolutely amazing art nouveau decor--that'll give you all the German you can handle! If you go buy yourself a beer glass or Stein with their logo on it. . .
If you have a day to drive somewhere, I would suggest The Eagles Nest. It is a two hour drive from Munich and offers spectacular views of the Alps. There is also a museum there (Eagles Nest was Hitler's southern headquarters) which is informative but not as overwhelming as visiting a concentration camp. Salzburg is also close and is an excellent city to visit for a day.
As mentioned earlier, Neuschwanstein is also spectacular and is 2 hours in the other direction.
I don’t recall the name of it, but there is an Irish pub below street level behind one of the big churches; I’ve had some good times there.
Get a liter. Then get a few more. Get some roast chicken and a pretzel. Then get a few more liters.
I've been several times, twice to Oktoberfest, and a couple others outside that.
My personal fave food/beer is the Schneider Bräuhaus. Great atmosphere and perhaps a little less touristy than Hofbräuhaus (no knock...HB is great fun). Schneider Aventinus (aka, Tap 6) is...if I was forced to name one...my favorite beer on the planet.
Great beer gardens in Munich, of course, which some have mentioned above. Assuming you make it to Englischer Garten, and therefore Chinesischerturm, you should also definitely check out Seehaus im Englischen Garten. One of my faves in all of Munich, with a stunning lakeside setting.
Supposedly, the real life inspiration for the Disneyland castle.
A daytrip from Munich (SW) by train. Train leaves every 2 hours.
Not sure where you're staying at but the Sofitel near the hbf is a really great place to stay. They have a pool in the basement that travels through the area like caves along with great steam rooms and saunas.
Also I'm not sure if its your thing but I feel like every man owes it to himself to check out an FKK at least once in your lifetime. The ones in Munich aren't that great but Frankfurt and the ones in Zurich are like being at the Playboy mansion. It's pretty awesome to check out
Maybe someone will find it useful. When you are abroad it's pretty hard to walk in unfamiliar places. And local postal codes are difficult to find. In such cases, on this site https://worldpostalcode.com/united-states/north-carolina/, you can check any postal code of any city of any country.
