OT: Pat Summerall is announcing the Cotton Bowl

Submitted by MBAgoblue on
I didn't know he was still sentient. The man is nearly 79 years old. This should be interesting.

You know what - I will take 80 year old Summerall over virtually any other PBP guy. All he does is tell you what's happening. He doesn't editorialize, he doesn't get on anyone's jock.

80 (actually 69) year old Brent Musburger, he of the largest man-crush in recorded history (Pete Carroll). I'm just glad that he got away from Madden. He could never get a word in edgewise with that babbling baffoon blathering away.

First, his voice reminds of NFL showdowns while growing up as he as always on those calls. He's lost it a bit, already twice he's mixed up either the down or yardage gain, but I do think the memory lane of his voice. He's been doing the Cotton Bowl for at least three seasons now. He could be dead, but frozen alive and Fox thaws him out for this one and only game. Who knows?

It reminds me of some of the original Madden Football video games. I haven't played since my college days, but it's like they just took some of those recordings and matched them with the plays of this game... sans Madden. Glad to hear him though. He's amazingly up to speed given his time off.

Worst half time ever. Shepard Smith? Awful? At least he's consistent with his false propaganda. I really hope someone posts that Texas Tech nonagenarian interview too. That was pricelessly awful.

Even past his prime, Summerall is still better than Musberger and most of the other bigmouths we have to listen to. He simply reports the game, and lets the picture tell the story. In his heyday, and I am old enough to remember that, he was simply the best NFL PBP guy, ever. For college football, he may be a little out of his element, but his broadcasting this game speaks volumes about the other morons we have to put up with, not because he happens to be 126 years old. Sometimes, older is better.

Not sure why, but his slowness and lack of ANY enthusiasm really bothers me. When a guy catches a pass 4 yards past the yellow line and he says "maybe enough for a first down" it bothers me to no end. Or when the ball is laying on the ground after an incompletion and he says complete pass. Or when Crabtree doesn't catch a pass in the first 8 mins of the 1st quarter and the guy CANNOT BELIEVE THEY ARE SHUTTING HIM DOWN. Or when someone breaks off a huge play and he mumbles "touchdown." No need to be overly enthusiastic, but come on, exciting plays are supposed to be exciting.

I remember he said "and Harrell throws one of those little garbage screens or something." The man was absolutely awful. I don't mind listening to Musberger.

Think about this, Summerall is almost 80, as you say, but Joe Pa if F'n 82!!!!! Although Summerall probably puts more work in than Joe Pa. Did you hear that he didn't even address his team at halftime?? WTF? If that doesn't prove that he is a figurehead nothing does.
