OT - John Beilein Family History (Saving Private Ryan) & Big Hearts for Seniors
John Beilein shared his family history as part of a fundraiser for Big Hearts for Seniors* tonight. His Mom was from a big Irish Catholic family and her brothers and first cousins fought in World War II and were part of the inspiration for the movie Saving Private Ryan. It was a really moving story and a good reminder of what we owe previous generations this Memorial Day.
His story begins at approx the 1:10 minute mark at this link
*Big Hearts for Seniors is a great organization that benefits programs for seniors that are affiliated with U of M: Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels, Housing Bureau for Seniors, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Silver Club Memory Programs, Turner Senior Wellness Program
There is a Silent Auction that is open until 6/3. There are some great deals on some items so you can save money and do good at the same time. For example, a $50 gift card to the People's Food Coop is currently going for $30, a $250 gift card to State & Liberty Clothing is going for $150; A 'Go Blue' bucket with fleece, basketball, t-shirt, coaster, games, etc is currently going for $50
Here are a couple of links that tell more about Beilein's family:
Can I bid on another B1G Championship?
Better bid high, comrade! I hear the Illinois AD isn't going to let another one slip through his fingers.
Thanks for posting. Fascinating story, and great stuff.
In a sports world crammed full with stories of corruption and shot through with greed, it's nice to read Coach Beilein's story of humble gratitude.
What an incredible story. I forgot about this. What a great reminder going into Memorial Day weekend.
