What has happened to the morality of people? We live in a world where people search out the individuals who are so broken and helpless and all that is seen are dollar signs.

We have the epidemic because the government made pain the 5th vital sign and doctors were graded and based on stupid patient satisfaction. So if your a doctor and your patient is in pain, and you don’t feel they need opiods and there patient does. You’d get a bad review and that would lower your scores leading to less reimbursement. The drug companies can also stop producing certain highly addictive medications like OxyContin but continue to make the less addictive opiates.

Certainly tragic. I’ve been off painkillers for 8 years now after 2 stints of rehab. While the insurance companies mentioned in the story are certainly in it for the cash, they are by no means responsible for his death. He made poor choice after poor choice. Ultimately, you have to face yourself in the mirror and decide what you want. Clean and sober or crash and burn. There are fantastic medications that can assist in getting you clean, and then the real hard work starts. Life being sober. Dealing with things as an adult, etc..
