he's one of the best guys available. I'm surprised it was VT who was able to grab him when other big programs are out looking - it probably helps a lot that VT could get their search going early

Not right on VT's part stipulating that Foster and Beamer's kid stay as part of the deal. A coach should be able to pick his staff. Obviously they're being retained as a gesture to Beamer. Foster's defenses haven't been as consistantly good as they used to be. As for Beamer's son, any man worth something would want a job on his own merit. At some point you have to make your own way and stop letting daddy take care of you.

Agreed. The previous staff has been stagnating. Why hamstring Fuentes with Beamer's old crew? If you like what Fuentes offers, let Fuentes to his thing.

Frankly I think Fuentes and his agent should've been patient and told VT that was a no deal item. Other schools would've come calling for him. He didn't use the leverage he had whatsoever

I'm assuming that today's reporting is accurate, and it may not be-- VT's AD said no deal has been officially reached, and added that since the new coach hasn't been hired, he couldn't confirm that any assistants were staying. But if this is true, I imagine Fuente wanted Bud Foster to stay. Part of his success at Memphis stemmed from hiring former head coaches as assistants, so he's comfortable working with guys who might have things to teach him, and he'd likely want to smooth the transition by keeping the most popular assistant coach in the history of the program.

As for Shane Beamer, I'd point out that he was hired at Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and South Carolina before returning to VT, he was VT's interim head coach in last year's bowl win, and media reports had him almost getting the Florida Atlantic head coaching job a couple of years ago. Keeping him on staff may not be the right decision for Fuente, and I'd agree that Fuente shouldn't have been asked to keep him as part of negotiations, but it wouldn't surprise me if Fuente wanted to keep Shane Beamer, too. The younger Beamer has accomplished a few things on his own.

VT hasn't been known for great QB play. Fuentes will get a chance to prove whether or not he is a QB guru on a bigger stage.

I think Fuentes may have asked Foster to stay. The kids there love him and more often than not they have legit defenses.

Yet another reason to be optimistic. Yes, today's loss was agonizing and humiliating among other things; however, we have the most important piece of our program locked up for a long, long time. In college football especially, the head coach is king and there is no one I would rather have at the helm of our program. This one will sting for a while, but I get the feeling Harbaugh will throw some more steel in the team's spine and have them ready to finish out with a big bowl victory. 10-3 is still on the line, and next year we are only better. Cheers to the Victors! For those who endured the loss live at the stadium, I salute you. For those who have tried to justify selling their tickets and allowing the Big House to become inundated with scarlet -- F you.
