OT: Detroit River Fireworks Tonight

Submitted by phork on

Set your watches accordingly if you plan on attending this evening.  They moved them up from from 10:06PM to 9:06PM due to possible storms later this evening.

I remember when the only day people really set off fireworks of their own was on July 4th too, but of course this year the 4th of July festivities on my street began about 10 days ago. Actually, the dude in the nearby apartment complex has a great show, though I wonder what the management compant thinks about it. Who am I kidding though....they are probably AT that party.

Of course, I haven't seen a 4th of July show in about ten years. It seems like I am working on the Fourth every year.

Avoid Hart Plaza and any public areas around the riverfront. Mostly okay if in a private party. I worked it for years, it gets extremely dangerous down there when the fireworks go off. So much noise, you wouldn't be able to hear a gunshot or screaming. Last 3 years I think there's been gunfire while the fireworks are going off. Hate that the city council fought against an earlier curfew for kids.

I think he meant to protect the kids who lack the ability to gauge the risk of attendance.

I work in one of the Renaissance center towers that face the river. One year, I stayed in the office late and watched the fireworks from my office. I watched in horror as an idiot down below accidentally fired a gun in his pants, watched people run away in all directions, etc. later that night someone was intentionally shot just outside of my view further upriver.

It is dangerous. I love Detroit, we have some great things going on, but people need to be cognizant of the crime in the city and protect themselves accordingly.

I lived down at Millender Center for two fireworks.  When they finished, my wife and I walked down to the parking garage to watch the scene.  So many idiots running around.  Police just want to get people out the city and numbnut kids want to obstruct as much as possible.  Thankfully I didn't see anything violent, but I gained a lot of appreciation for the cops those nights.

I lived down at Millender then too. Friday nights were spent watching police chase people up and down Jefferson and search helicopters overhead. Totally agree, respect for Detroit's finest, not an easy job in the slightest.

...and today, I left the RenCen at 1 pm. All of us do. It's mayhem.

There's also an aurora going on with viewing possible as far south as Raleigh. Too bad it's all clouds around the Detroit area tonight.
