OT-Chris Berman: Our American Atrocity

Submitted by twohooks on

For 31 years now Chris Berman has kicked in the door to our living rooms for ESPN, rambling and bumbling like your once funny college roommate whom you dont speak to anymore for a reason. I get it (Berman), you were the first one on the mothership and you had a bevy of nicknames that once made us chuckle. This man has basically used his executive power at ESPN to buy himself a career giving washed up players from the NFL auditions on NFL Countdown, so they in turn are  in need of an opportunity. I cannot turn the channel nor listen to the home run derby on the radio, so I am stuck watching and listening to this buffoon. I could be in the minority but i wish Chris "Bummer" Berman would go Back, Back, Back where he came from. Chris, I am not with you, "Leather."

Well said... I can't stand that @#$%ing guy.

I think he's partly to blame for the whole ESPN-ish "I'm not just a sportscaster -- I am also a witty and well-read fellow!" phenomenon.  I'll still take that over a 3rd-string, small-market sportscaster, but it gets to be too much after a few minutes.  Just show me the highlights, please.

He is probably partly to blame for that phenomenon that you cite.  Some of the people who grew up and/or went to college watching him then got jobs on ESPN and wanted to imitate him.  I don't believe that Berman set out to be a comedian though.  He approached sportscasting as how he and his drinking buddies would report on sports news, and it ended up connecting with people tremendously.  Like Keith Jackson, he will be incorrectly remembered for a few catchphrases, rather than all of the other positive traits that he had as a sports caster.

I'll take your Chris Berman and raise you a Suzyn Waldman. Whenever I hear her orgasmic like gushing over Roger Clemens, it makes me wants to stick something sharp in my ears.
