OT: 7-on-7 Collegiate League

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on

So I was thinking about summer baseball/softball leagues such as the Cape Cod League, and I got to wondering what the market would be for a Collegiate 7-on-7 League. For those of you less familiar with 7-on-7, several states have high school tournaments for skill players in a 7-on-7, limited contact football. The season generally goes from May to July, right before the off season comes to a close.

So my question to you guys, would a league like this be feasible? I have to imagine it'd be a huge money maker if the NCAA would allow it. Thoughts?

How about we just make 7-on-7 its own sport in the spring... I think the ratings would be insane!

It'd be so sweet to see top QB's go head to head week after week in tournaments.  And because you can have multiple games you can see players more extensively... and I'm sure the NFL would love that.

Think if last spring you had a Tebow-led Florida 7s squad vs. a Colt McCoy-led Texas 7s squad one Saturday... It'd get big time tv ratings.  And while ESPN shows some college baseball... after March Madness I think the public would really enjoy this.

I thought about spring sport status, but by using all your same players from football, that makes it the same as the spring game and therefore regulated as just fall football workouts. It'd be like when softball takes on Michigan State in an exhibition. I'm liking the college baseball comparison better. They'd get the best players in the best leagues, have it independent of NCAA jurisdiction. Host families would take care of the players for the 2 months of the season.
