MLive article on our recent international commitments

This is an interesting read from MLive.  It provides good information on how Michigan is thinking outside traditional methods for bringing in talent.  It speaks well of Elston and how the Michigan coaches go about their business.  It also makes me optimistic about the upside of these new commitments.

You're not gonna hit on everyone but no one believed in David Ojabo either. The state of Michigan has a long history of being ahead of the curve with international prospects, as the Red Wings will tell you.

I think plenty of people believed in Ojabo. They might not have predicted "1st round projection" (pre-injury) but he was on the map as a recruit and one site (247?) said he checked all the boxes for an edge prospect (height, weight, multiple sports, etc.).

I apologize for the thread jack, but I don't think this is enough for its own thread yet it's too good to ignore.

Oh boy not hit a home run.  They'll be lots of non-supporters refusing to comment on this one.  But this is Great!  Go Blue, as always.

I believe there may be a niche opening for recruiting international players. Especially so on the defensive side of the ball for larger bodies that do not have a place to contribute in soccer, rugby, hockey or basketball.

It helps to be well known across the world as a university. If you can't beat the initial NIL rush, be a leader and find ways to augment your roster. Looking forward to what UM can do with these kids and make them successful.

I may have missed this.  When the NCAA upheld the SEC / ACC request to prevent other schools / conferences from conducting satellite camps in their “footprint”, didn’t they come up with a reason to prohibit other schools from recruiting in Europe too?

Glad Michigan is finding talent “everywhere”.

Wishing these young men well.  Go Blue!

I read your words as attributing to Elston.  He may be a fine coach, but  I wanna say in case people think he was the one who started the international push here.  Harbaugh was the one, and Collier is Don Brown's guy.

I'm afraid Koumba is gonna end up in OSU's class, because hes on record saying he wants to go there, and OSU never offered, and we have three ends, and possibly four with Harbor.  Thats when OSU is gonna pounce.

  1. When was the last time a commit flipped from Michigan to OSU? Not to mention, how many commits have we gotten who wanted to go to OSU but still ended up at Michigan?
  2. Harbor is on record saying he wants to play offense

Thanks. I forgot that Harbor is gonna be a WR.

I recall several Michigan leans, and then they signed with OSU once they got the offer...but I think you're right, there's never been a true flip that was committed to us.

But there is risk there... We have three edges... And one wanted to go to OSU but didn't get the offer.  If Koumba does, it may happen. Obviously I don't want it.

Makes sense to look elsewhere, especially given UM's global name recognition academically as well athletically (as opposed to a number of other schools).  I do think we'll see other prominent schools follow that trend but for now it's a pretty easy Moneyball-esque solution.
