Probably the right move, as that program has a toxic, divided culture right now, and while I'm sure Claeys did not mean anything bad by what he said, the overly PC world we live in would never allow for something like this to stand. He was a dead man walking the minute he posted that tweet.

Also didn't help that Claeys just isn't that good a coach, and he isn't going to take Minnesota anywhere it isn't already at. Being a winner MAY have at least bought him some time. But now if you're Minnesota, who do you hire? Any halfway decent coach is already off the market or wouldn't even touch that program right now. You're already behind everyone else in recruiting, setting up a staff, etc. Minnesota isn't that big of a draw to begin with. They may have to dip down into the MAC / FCS ranks, and I just don't see them getting any better anytime soon.

Claeys isn't that good of a coach?  He just led Minnesota to their best record since 2003. It's not like Minnesota is some kind of sleeping power - 9-4 is about their ceiling. Minnesota also had their best SRS rating since the Glen Mason days.

I think his tweet was pretty fucking horrible, and I don't know if there was anything more behind it. But I think that on the field, he was at the very least a competent coach.

The players seem to be in open rebellion and are talking about transferring.

This could leave lasting scars on the Minnie football program.

Minnesota QB Mitch Lender: “No one is happy w/administration right now. I don’t know who would want to be part of this program at this time"

Minnesota underclassman: “Doesn’t matter who coach is we don’t want to play for administration. Countless people will transfer if possible”
