Wish he woulda mentioned Saban's oversigning practices with Nutt's.  I did hear about the guy they got last year from Florida.  He stole the identity of a Florida student who had died.  And then Nutt took him.  I believe in second chances, but obviously nutt had no intention of helping the kid.

Found this on ESPN -

24-hour drive through, late night - trying to get some grub, and somebody (presumably drunk) rear ends the kid.  Kid and two of his boys get out, rob the guy, and beat him up.  Brass knuckles were used.

Still pretty ridiculous but not "beat up a McDonald's employee in broad daylight because his fries were too soggy".

If I were Mandel, I wouldn't necessarily go criticize Nutt for hiring Gus Malzahn. True, his motives were somewhat questionable, but he hired a guy who has shown himself to be one of the best and most innovative offensive coordinators in the country.

Masoli has issues, but Mandel is overreacting.  One thing I learned on mgoblog and as a Michigan fan is not to jump to conclusions.

"Only a dirty coach would take a chance on a kid who so blatantly duped his previous coach."

Riiiiiight.

"Indeed, what better place to send a wayward quarterback than to the coach who helped turn Jevan Snead into an undrafted free agent."

That's such an incredibly stupid comment.  Tell me Mandel, how is that Nutt's fault?  Snead wasn't even on the map until he played at Arkasnas.

"As soon as he got through the next regular season, Nutt packed his bags for Oxford before someone else did it for him."

How is that wrong?  People do that all the time in business.  There were some controversies swirling around and the school seemed to be a bit insane so Nutt got out of Dodge.  That's slimy?  I also second Seth9 for mentioning that Nutt brought a brilliant offensive mind to NCAA football, so you can't criticize that move too much.

Look, I'm no fan of Houston Nutt or any other SEC coach, but I hate stupid, agenda-driven journalists like Mandel even more.

Masoli did dupe his previous coach, he lied to him and to the police. After giving him a second chance, Masoli was caught with pot and Kelly apparently felt that was reason to kick him off of the team. Masoli lied to his coach, and Nutt apparently doesn't care.

Jevan Snead was a former 5-star recruit who transferred from Texas to Ole Miss after having been beaten out by Colt McCoy. Snead was on the map, and he never played a down for Arkansas.

I don't care about Nutt leaving for Ole Miss, but his hiring of Malzahn was probably done for the wrong reasons. He got two 5-stars and two others from Malzahn's HS team after hiring Malzahn as the OC, and then he takes control of his offense and the two blue-chips transfer to USC and Malzahn winds up at Tulsa. That's incredibly sketchy.

What's Mandel's agenda? SI published a fluff piece on Masoli a few days ago, and this is a counterpoint.

Like I said, Mandel is overreacting.  I accidentally said Snead wasn't on the map until he played at Arkansas.  I meant Ole Miss.  So if he transfered from Texas after losing out to Colt McCoy, how is that Houston Nutt's fault?  That was Snead's decision, and he did fine at Ole Miss.  What happened to him in the NFL isn't really Nutt's fault.  By Mandel's reasoning, isn't Mack Brown also to blame for Snead's lack of success?  I don't like Nutt, but Mandel just looks like another idiot sportswriter who can only make a point by drawing bullseyes around darts in the wall.

I think you're grasping at straws here. He may be overreacting a tad, and maybe the shot at his development of Jevan Snead was bush league, but I still think that he makes some valid points. Whether Nutt should have taken in Masoli is a matter of opinion, but it looks like a desperate move to win from an outsider's perspective, just as Malzahn's hiring was.

Talk about "no holds barred". If that sports writer thing doesn't work out, I think Mandel could have a respectable career as a prosecutor.
