Hyman NOT selected to Hobey Hat Trick (aka Finalists)

Submitted by gwkrlghl on

In a somewhat surprising result, our own Zach Hyman was not selected as a finalist for the Hobey Baker award. Jimmy Vesey of Harvard seems to have taken the spot I thought Hyman might have. Missing the tournament probably hurt Zach's chances.

Hobey Hat Trick:
Jack Eichel, F, Boston University -  24G, 43A,(1st in scoring)
Zane McIntyre, G, North Dakota - .931 SV% (6th), 1.99 GAA (11th)
Jimmy Vesey, F, Harvard - 32G, 26A (3rd in scoring)

Zach Hyman, F, Michigan - 22G, 32A (4th in scoring)

Eichel will likely win in a landslide. I find it a bit interesting McIntyre is there. He seems to be getting treatment akin to being the QB of the #1 ranked football team as there are other goalies out there that are statistically better

McIntyre is solid. I like Hyman but I didn't think he was worthy of the final 3. Had a great season but when you miss the tournament it's hard for me to recognize you as one of the best players in the game.

Not surprised.  No tournament.  No Hobey.  I'm not sure what the point of the online voting is though.  Zach had a great season and wish him the best in the NHL.

The Hobey is just as much about the regular season as the "what have you done/not done for me lately" in the regional. You can be a finalist after the regular season and work your way into the Hat Trick with a good regional, or have a dynamite season and be left out if you slip up (see: TJ Hensick's game misconduct in Denver). It's a total crapshoot.

He wasn't going to win, but he could have given himself a chance if the team hadn't systematically pissed away a tournament bid.

McIntyre put up really good numbers in a conference that put 6 teams in the tournament. If there was a knock on Hyman, it's that he played in the Big Ten.

Eichel should win this running away, if not unanimously (I'm certain some NoDak reporters will vote for McIntyre because East Coast Bias!). I also feel like it would be hollow for a guy whose college career is over and whose team didn't even play in the tournament to go to the Frozen Four. Not for the fans, but for the player himself. That said, Hyman was one of the primary reasons we actually came close to making the tournament this year, and I wish him the best in Florida.
