Hanlon Letter

Not sure if I am allowed to post this (saw it on Rivals) but I don't care. This has to be shared. Apparently, this was revealed to the team already by Jerry Hanlon. To the Men in Maize & Blue, As I stood on the sideline outside the Glick Field House, my mind was filled with mixed thoughts about this season. Nothing seemed to go right, no luck at all. Fumbles, missed assignments, dropped passes, missed tackles, open receivers on defense all produce negative vibes. All these thoughts seemed to emanate from the practice field in the late afternoon. I could almost feel the frustration and disappointment of not winning hanging in the air. Is it worth all the time and effort? All the time with Mike [Barwis] on the field and in the weight room. All the time staying up late to study or finish a paper. All that negative reaction from the media and some fans. All that hollering endured from coaches. Why should we play such a fickle game called football? Then I turned and saw Elliott Mealer's brother Brock sitting back away from the sidelines in his wheelchair. He had the biggest smile on his face as he watched all of you cavort around the field. He too complained to me how hard Mike had worked him out. But he was elated because he had felt a muscular sensation and couldn't wait to come back to push himself to the limit as he continues to try to gain control of his body. At that moment it occurred to me how stupid and selfish we, who are involved in the game of football, sometimes are. To be able to run and jump, to throw and catch, to be talented enough to play at the college level, and now be a part of the greatest rivalry in college football should be cherished and appreciated. You who feel sorry for yourself or somehow cheated should not suit up for this game. Only those who realize how lucky they are to play this game should face this challenge. Only those who are willing to lay it all on the line to gain the respect of your teammates, your coaches, and most of all, your opponent, should show up Saturday. It is sometimes hard to show what kind of man you are. Now you can exhibit the intelligence, the courage, the determination, and the loyalty it takes to be a winner. If every man in a winged helmet becomes as one you'll be a force to be reckoned with. No matter the outcome, you can walk up the tunnel with your head held high and just maybe a little better man than you were before, and with a smile like Brock. Coach Hanlon

that one of the smartest things RR could have done was to make Hanlon an official assistant coach. There's nobody in college football who's a better OL coach.

OMG the QB is toast

Great to see such inspiring words from Hanlon. If there ever was a time for a regime-defining win, I think this may be it for Rich Rod. A win tomorrow would be huge for him, for the team and for the university. I'm sure teams with a more mature group of players are less vulnerable to emotional swings, but an upswing like a win tomorrow could bring would help get this young group into the right place emotionally and be huge for team morale (imho). A loss...ugh.

If Hanlon wrote this and not rivals, then I'm not sure why people think you should not be able to post it. Rivals does not have a copyright in a letter that they did not write.

It really is amazing how Law School causes one to second-guess every single thing they know or thought they knew. I am scared to give people a high five now, thinking I am going to somehow be charged with battery.........

Consent is a defense to battery, and a high-five requires two people with hands raised in the air. Immediately prior to contact, each high-fiver's actions generally supplies an implied consent that will serve as an absolute defense to an action for battery. If not, the plaintiff will have a difficult time demonstrating anything beyond nominal damages unless he happens to be a truly bizarre eggshell plaintiff. It really is amazing how Law School causes one to sputter useless information that tends to do no more than annoy those around him/her.

Obviously the fact that the touching was not consented to is one of the elements of battery. However, what if the other person is stretching in the air and you mistook this for an offer to "high five"? Haha, I agree though....the discussion of nuances related to the Law does little more than to annoy those people in the general vicinity.

Spoken like a law student. :) As a lawyer, I know we do not have nearly enough facts. Thankfully, no complex analysis is required. No one - but NO ONE - would be seeking damages for spreading such well-written and inspirational words among the Michigan community. It's a wonderful letter, uplifting message, and to top it all off ... Rivals is credited. Nothing to see here but a terrific letter.

Well I think it is a little more complicated than saying it is for sure not illegal. You probably contractually agreed to not copy and paste information behind a rivals paywall when you bought the service. Whether that contract means anything . . .
