GR Drive G League player Zeke Upshaw collapsed on court

The WOOD TV8 story came across my news feed last night during the UofM postgame presser. Reports said Zeke Upshaw was in cardiac arrest. The video this morning is alarming as the response seemed to be of someone who was concussed not pulseless. Minutes go by until paramedics walk a stretcher to his location on the court. No updates have been given since he was initially listed as critical at Spectrum Hospital. This community is only 7 years removed from the death of Wes Leonard. Treatment for athletes that are stricken by Sudden Cardiac Death have progressed to an awareness that defibrillators need to be at these venues. But they have to be immediately connected to assess and treat a lethal arrhythmia. He appears to be collapsing at the start of this video as he crosses the free throw line chasing his man to the corner. https://youtu.be/-MS87OcNF68 http://www.woodtv.com/news/kent-county/drives-upshaw-collapses-on-court…

This stuff is so scary, because it is often symptomless before it strikes. If you have even the remotest chest pain or tightness get it checked out, no matter your overall health. Even a slight viral infection can put a lot of strain on your heart. Hope the doctors find a way to save him.

Wes Leonard was found to have had an enlarged heart following a viral illness shortly before he passed. Pre season screening would not have predicted that would’ve happened to him. Sadly the first signs and symptoms are sometimes the last. It’s important to learn from these incidents. There are plenty of coaches, parents and fans on this forum. The initial reaction when this happens is disbelief. The impulse to act must follow. It’s counter to our societal norm to put hands on other people. When in doubt break out the AED and place the patches. It’s so east that a 5th grader can do it. If your instincts are unfortunately correct you can save a life. If not, the worst that happens is a pair of sticky patches gets used up. They are expendable people are not.

Hard to believe he was in cardiac arrest. They just leave him prone that entire time. If he was pulseless they would've immediately rolled him and started CPR.
