ESPN: Burke doesn't miss this chance for Michigan

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Solid article on Burke finally getting a game winning shot to fall. But watch the video of the game recap. Vitale goes nuts! The Motown Mash?

Also (in response to the video), I don't want to hear "Kansas gave Michigan" anything. Sometimes, probably the majority of the time that happens. Michigan TOOK this game. They flat-out outplayed/outcoached the Jayhawks down the stretch.

Nonetheless, nice recap and quotes from Trey.

Michigan did take this game. Those who say KU gave it away are wrong unless they agree with the argument that UM gave it away for the first 37 minutes. Go Blue!

the narrative around here would be 98% that we gave it away to Kansas and 2% that the Jayhawks took it.

It's not taking anything away from Michigan to acknowledge that Kansas played poorly in the final minutes, because we still had to make the plays to take advantage of it. If Trey or Mitch or GRIII or Morgan don't do what they did, Kansas would be the team celebrating.

Sure fans would say that. That's what fans do.

But analysts are suppose to analyze the game. And if you watched...the only thing KU really did to help us was the 10 second call.

I don't even count the missed front end of the 1-and-1 because the same kid hit 2 shots in a 1-and-1 right before that. Releford also made 2 free throws when they called a foul on McGary's block. That's 4 of 5...that's not GIVING Michigan anything.

Think back to Michigan vs. IU...we missed the front end of a 1-and-1 THREE times!! That's giving the game away.

Burke made a 30+ foot jumper with a hand somewhat in his face. What did KU give them there?

...again, most times I think you can say the other team helped, but outside of that 10-second call, we got NO help from KU.

That's probably a good way to put it. Kenpom probability chart, via UMHoops:

With about 2:30 to go in regulation, Michigan's win chances per KenPom bottomed out at around 0.6%, which looks bleak when you can sit here and mull over the numbers, but it seems like, at that moment, whatever had been missing for 37 minutes suddenly came into being. As Burke himself said, they were not allowing themselves to believe that this was over, and it worked - they scraped back against a Kansas team that was quickly losing its focus (iffy passes, the 10-second call in the backcourt, etc..).

You can see where the OT-forcing three happened, but more importantly, it was the intersection of Michigan's newfound fight and Kansas' deflation. Statistically and psychologically, I don't think Kansas recoverd from Burke's three-pointer. I think that the KenPom graph is more or less what taking a game looks like, although we should acknowledge that all of it was made possible in no small part to the complacency and strategic lapses of the Jayhawks touched on in the video.

gave it away - 99.4% at 2:30. They made some dumb plays and, other than Trey's long 3, we didn't really have any crazy lucky plays. I actually thought we played mediocre until the last 5 min when the guys seemed to play with urgency. Give the UM players all the credit for playing hard to the very end.

But doesn't skip discussion about karma.  A smile-inducing read:  LINK

All season long, the Wolverines were carried by the majesty of Burke and his merry band of talented freshmen while being marked with a scarlet D.

Overtime. Which made zero sense, but made perfect sense. If that makes sense.

Love this quote from Glenn (talking about Trey) "The main thing he kept saying was, 'Believe,'" Robinson III said. "He said, 'We can't lay down right now. We've worked too hard to lose this game by 10 or 15. We've got to cut this lead down. If we don't step our game up right now, this is it for us. We might regret this for the rest of our lives." That's leadership right there. Hop on the bandwagon everyone - this team is clicking at the right time.
