Disappointing Season

Submitted by Blazefire on
It's kind of sad commentary, isn't it. This has just reached the bottom of MGoLicious on the right, and every time I've seen it for the past week or so, I've had the same thought: "Wolverines hope to overcome disappointing '09, look ahead toward new season." When I see that, my first thought is always, "That could be ANY M sport right now." Heres to a more prosperous future!

but i believe, like most people, i took advantage of never having a down year. im a better fan because of it, so i frame my 08 and 09 season tickets and hung them in my "man cave" right next to my 97 national champ banner. looking forward to 2010!!! go blue.

These are the years Michigan fans earn their stripes. I keep thinking back to that HBO special about "The Game" and the cycles of ups/downs in Michigan history (and incidentally touches on the economic ups/downs as well.) At any right, in the grand scheme of things, I think these last few years will prove to be formative years of Michigan football for the next 20 or so years. (At least I'm telling myself this.)

As someone who has been a fan since 1960, the most consistent pattern I have seen at UM is that while teams may have down cycles, they always make it back. This has been a very disappointing time because, as both Brian and the OP have noted, all of the teams are down at once, but it's just a blip on the radar screen. I choose to see it as a temporary disharmonic convergence. This is the year the football team makes it "back." The basketball team may or may not improve, but I think they will have a better record next year due to experience, even if Manny does leave. They will have a little more height, and this year's F and S classes will be S and J classes next season. I know that we are sweating recruiting more with basketball than any other sport, but it usually seems to work out. Hockey and baseball should be able to reload well enough to make it back to the levels to which they are accustomed. Baseball might make it back this year. All in all, it's still great to be a UM fan. And it's the lean years that make the good years more of a reason to celebrate. When the Wings won their first championship in some 40 years, it was a great feeling. When the Pistons won their first championship ever, it was almost unimaginable. When the Wolverines start performing on elite levels again, some of us may appreciate it more than we would have without the "curse of 2009-10." I know I'll be excited.

'The Great Depression'! I certainly hope the best for all the athletes that compete for the maize and blue, but like most of us it's the football team my heart pours out to the most. There is light at the end of the tunnel, but I still think there is plenty of tunnel to walk. The '10 squad will be better then it's predecessors, but they will still be young; I think the '11 squad is the one who will compete for national glory. Hopefully the '10 squad comes through, continues the improvements, and closes the book on this bleak chapter of Michigan lore.

I know it has def been a tough few years looking back, but I figured we would go 6-6 last year so not making a bowl was disappointing. It will be fun to watch these kids grow and turn into a team that went 5-7 to hopefully championship caliber in the next few years. It is strange to say, because ive always watched and followed michigan football, but with Carr as a coach we always were so highly ranked and always lost games we should of never lost. I just feel given time RR will bring it all home.

Just remember...Every path has a few puddles. Overnight success comes only after many days of hard work. If you can't be content with what you have,be thankful for what you have escaped.

My roommate and I were talking the other day and we were wondering when the last time the football team didn't make a bowl game and both the basketball and hockey team (assuming they don't make it this season) didn't make it to their post eason tournaments. Any insight? Or could this be the first year in history??
