DB considering Senate run? [Read Only]

Submitted by might and main on

Per WDIV news, DB is considering a run for Levin's Senate seat.  Discuss.  But without discussing politics.

Mod edit: Nothing wrong with posting the story since it is definiely on-topic, but with the small bit of information in the article (the entire story relating to Brandon is, "Sources confirm for us that University of Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon is considering a run [for the vacant Senate seat]") there's pretty much no way it allows for a meaningful on-topic discussion and has a high probability of going political. If/when more information is available it should make for a worthwhile discussion for the MGoBoard, but I just don't see it with this one line. JGB.

Kinda hard to not talk about politics when the topic is, you know, politics...

Anyways, with a new school president on the way in, it logistically makes sense for DB to head out (and I don't necessarily mean that in a negative way).  I don't like or hate the guy, but I think he's made his mark on the university in a more positive way than his predecessors, so an exit at this point seems understandable if true.

I'm not much into this type of thing, so I may a bit naive in asking question, but who would some candidates be to replace David Brandon were he to leave the role of AD, soon or down the road?

If he wants to do it, it's pretty much now or never. He flirted with running against Stabenow in 2006. In this election, he wouldn't have to face an incumbent with their huge built-in advantages. He'd have at least a puncher's chance. Really comes down to whether he sees the AD as his terminal job.

- A good percentage of the state won't vote for a Republican.

- A good percentage of Republican/undecided voters are Michigan State fans, who won't vote for him.

- A good percentage of his natural demographic (Michigan fans) won't vote for him, for whatever reason, political or personal.

- The easiest parallel to make with Brandon (Ann Arbor businessman, relatively uncontroversial public persona, viewed as politically neutral) is Rick Snyder, who currently has sub-40% popularity levels, and who ran a neutral campaign that veered vastly right-wing after two years.  Everything negative about Snyder will be attached to Brandon.

I don't think Brandon will run.  It's a bad race for him to run in, sources tell me he prefers being an exec to being "1 of 100", and I don't see a path to victory for him.

If he does run, I think it will be a mistake in the long run.

Republicans pissed at his decisions on uniforms and stadium music: a senate election will make both Michigan athletics and the senate better.

Democrats happy with his selection of new coaches: a senate election will make both Michigan athletics and the senate worse.
