CB's playing off 10 yards, why?
I have a question that has been nagging at me since, and during, last season. Why do we line up our CB's 8-10 yards from the LOS?
This seams to me to put our CB's at such a disadvantage as they are forced to be re-active, rather than pro-active. The receivers are wide open for quick outs and easy 5 yard, or more, gains. Our CB's are on their heals, and the receivers have a free and clear 10 yards to gather momentum and run uncontested routes.
Why aren't our CB's up on the line of scrimmage disrupting the receivers? Why are they back 8-10 yards waiting to get burned? I am watching the Spring Game (again) and the frustration boiled up again to the point I had to beg this question. Anyone in the know?
Go Blue!
Giving up a huge cushion arguably protected the safeties, but it did nothing for the corners. Cissoko was on an island all day against ND. The sideline was open so quickly after the snap that the safeties rarely had time to get anywhere near the ball.

I personally do not care if the CBs play 10 yards off as long as they shut down the other team's WRs. If executed right the CBs can play 10 yards off and still come up with stops.
It is called a coverage 3 which means the corners in our defense have a deep third as well as the deep safety. It is the responsibility of the outside linebacker or box safety to bust out and cover flats. We were unable to do this last year effectively and got burned on it often.
isn't that to much to ask?
When you come up with the ideal to defense to run with crappy CB's, safeties, and LB's, get back to us.
Its really just that simple, isn't it...
good players = good defense
At the end of the day there aren't "bad schemes" and "good schemes", as the dudes who come up with the stuff generally know lots of things about football. There may be good players and bad players for a particular scheme.
But, I defy anyone here to come up with a scheme for a defense whose back 7 has 4 gaping holes.

Yup, and since UM will probably start 2 db's who have little to no experience this fall expect to see the same thing from the cb's at least in September a lot. If the db's play pretty solid and the coaches get some confidence in them, the coaches will probably start to mix it up more.
you can't polish a turd into anything more than a turd.
