Another Michigan Sitcom Cameo: Chris Webber on "The Odd Couple" Tonight

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Nothing will ever top Harbaugh playing Screech's cousin on "Saved By the Bell," but in a rerun of "The Odd Couple" tonight on CBS (8:30), C-Webb makes a cameo as himself:

I have never seen this show, and I have to believe it's awful, but I'll probably tune in tonight to see it. There was another thread from a few months back that listed all the athletic Wolverines who have made cameo appearances on TV, and it's an impressive list, indeed.

but instead of calling time out when he didn't have any left ,he will yell "cut" when he thinks he has forgotten his lines, when in reality, that scene had no lines for him.

Tremendous basketball player but I still feel some negative thoughts towards him for his hand in bringing down UM basketball.

like you also still harbor negative thoughts toward him for the timeout, which I think can partially explain Webber's lack of desire to associate himself with Michigan.  You cannot think Michigan and Chris Webber without thinking "timeout."  It is probably the moment in time that he wishes most be could forget and associating himself with Michigan would completely prohibit that.  That is my theory and I am sticking to it.

over the time out. It's all the Ed Martin stuff he and others were involved in that gutted that program in its aftermath for several years. I gotta admit though, he and the rest of theat group were sure fun to watch.

chances Jalen Rose calls into a radio show or goes on ESPN and says "look at that, you hang out with the odd couple but you don't even hang with YOUR BOYS" or some variation of that?  Pretty high I would say.

Jalen had a nice long career, but he's linked to CWebb until the end of time.  Unfortunately that means he'll have to say no comment or give his opinion for a few more decades.

First, thanks for posting.  Seriously.

Second, does "as himself" mean that he'll be blaming Jalen Rose, Steve Fisher, Ray Jackson, James Duderstadt, Juwan Howard, Red Berenson, and anyone else he can think of for perjuring himself?  C-Webb seems to have this whole "C-Webb vs. Everybody" attitude, and as part of "Everybody" I'm OK with that.

Damned shame, too, because he was a wonderful athlete.

I can't imagine from the comments in this thread why C-Webb has mixed emotions about his experience at Michigan. . .

IMHO, the comments on this thread and feelings most fans are a result of his attitude. Most fans can forgive the time out (as we know we wouldn't have gotten there without him) and the Ed Martin issues, but he has shown ZERO remorse for what his actions have done to the program after he left.  I'm not trying to start a discussion on whether athletes should get paid etc., but whether people agree or disagree with the rules, they are the rules and his breaking the rules helped screw the program for so many years AND thrust sparty into prominence.

Emotions aside, C-Webb had the some of the best hands ever in a big man. Soft when he needed that touch for a pass or strong when he went to dunk. I've always wondered what if with him. He was an emotional wreck by the time he left UM, mostly self inflicted.

He lived in Detroit, balled at St. Cecilia and wanted to be hard like Jalen and the rest of the guys in the gym.  But Chris was going to Country Day which is a polar opposite to the experience of the guys from his AAU and summer league teams.  I think he wanted multiple things and be liked by those he valued without truly understanding who he was and being happy with it.

Jimmy King grew up in a more affluent situation but he always seemed comfortable with who he is and where he came from.

I don't know all that happened with C-Webb and the money.  I don't know how you hide that amount of money.  To be honest, I'm more upset that we didn't do like Penn State and fight the allegations and sanctions.  I still don't know of any witnesses to this stuff.  If this was football, there's no way we impose bowl bans and scholarship reductions.

understand, at least what is public, is that most of the Martin money came after he had declared or at least after it was clear he was not coming back but before the draft.  That is the public narrative. As to your other point, I think the Fab Five was dirty, like Blue Chips dirty, and the less looking the better it was for everybody.  I'm sorry, but I don't for one second believe that only Webber took money or that it was only after the fact.

Mitch Albom has that opinion that it came after he declared.  If so, I guess I don't see the issue.  But then again, why take money a few months short of being a (multi)millionaire?

Jalen said he took money also, but not a lot.  These kids didn't look like they had money and I know their families looked and behaved the same.  It's hard to hide that type of money at home.  Someone's talking, even in snitch-free Detroit.

Something about that Webber thing just didn't smell right.  Like, unless Webber is signing receipts, how is that proof?  When a crook is your credible witness, there's a problem.

Jalen did say that kids at other schools were being given money as well.  Guys hanging around our program were dirty, even back in the Frieder days.  Same goes for MSU and Iowa.  We just got caught/gave up any fight against the NCAA.

Love that show and love Tom Lenon. Especially catch him when he's on @Midnight on Comedy Central. Gold.

These are all reruns though as the season has been over for a while. Waiting on season two.
