2011 Unofficial Depth Chart

Submitted by Ziff72 on

I updated our 3 deep to bring us into the new year.   If anyone with enough points sees any mistakes go correct them.  I kept it pretty generic from last year, but it was tough coming up with a 3 deep in LB's and S right now.

Couple of thoughts updating it.

1. OL looks awesome...8 deep.  We are in great shape but we need 4 in this class and 4 in the next class and no injuries this year.

2. Offense looks awfully familiar...oh yeah we return like 33 of 36 offensive guys. No pressure Borges.....don't fuck it up.

3. Considering our schemes from 95-97 and everything that GMatt has been exposed to and our current roster I could see a lot of a 4-2-5 look next year.  Mattison has seen and run just about everything the last few years and if you think back to 97 we had a lot of tweeners like Gold, Jones, Copenhaver,  Swett  etc...that weren't more than 220 lb's and we blitzed from everywhere.  I know everyones down on the 3-3-5 and being multiple scares the Gerg out of us, but I really think we'll see a nickle look a lot with 2 big safeties dropping down for that 4-4 look we saw against OSU.  He's going to use the talent we have and we have at least 10-15 guys that are S/OLB types that are young with potential.  This will be an absolute battle from the weight room to the practice field to earn time.   I look for whoever emerges from the fray to have huge careers for us.

4. All these 220 lb guys getting seasoned is going to make our special teams rock solid.  Our coverage teams should be stellar.

5. 2012 Recruiting Class will be very interesting since we are getting so many guys right now.   We'll need 4 OL, 2 QB 2 WR and 3 DT and we're leading with a lot of Mich D players(RJK, Ross, Richardson etc).

Why is everyone so insistent on RVB becoming a DT?  WIth him, we have three DEs who have ever seen the field, without him we have two.  If he moves, we are relying on a lot of young and unproven players for depth.

Also, leaving him at DE gives us some serious beef on the DL.  I'd rather have QW on the DL than Jibreel Black, especially against a team who can run the ball at all.  I can see putting in Black for Q on passing downs, but not as the usual set.

I kinda like RVB as a big DE on 1st down as well, but I think you will see that Black needs to be on the field.  I think he is going to be a difference maker.  Roh, Black on the edges Martin and RVB collapsing the middle with C. Gordon blitzing will be very scary for Qb's next year.

I agree, I like Black, and I think he'll see the field.  The third DE is usually a guy who gets PT, especially if he's a good pass rusher like Black is.  HOWEVA, Quinton Washington is a big man, and I've heard more good things about him than about Black.  Plus, starting Roh and Black opposite each other gives us two weakside DE, and a slightly undersized DL.

I believe it's here based on the preceding discussion and the fact the RVB is listed as a DT in it. (Go to the "Useful Stuff" link at the top right of the page and then "Unofficial Two Deep".  It says there that it's as of 11/9/10 but I think that's not true.

I could well be wrong though.

Good answer, because when I saw this post that's what I assumed also. It's wrong though, because Schilling and Ezeh and the other 2010 seniors are listed. So it couldn't be 2011.

Hmmm...I'd really like to know where this is too

Edit- I accidently clicked on depth chart by class for this response, so my comment is wrong. However I don't know if the two deep is this years or lasts (damn, this team is young).

I like most of what I see, especially on offense. Although, I don't agree with everything on defense. I suspect the coaches will run a 4-3 the majority of the time.

1.) I don't believe RVB will be moved to DE. He is needed at DE because I don't see anyone other than RVB and Roh being a dependable starter. I'm not sure about Black staying at DE. He looks more like a DT to me most of the time. He needs some work before he is going to be able to hold up against the run at DT though. It's possible a true freshman gets some time at DE in 2011.

2.) I suspect that Ash, Campbell, Talbott or Washington will be able to step in as the second DT to Martin. I like Ash's chances.

3.) I suspect C. Gordon and Furman will play WLB with Jones as the starter. C Gordon will be an asset when blitzing LBs.

4.) I suspect C. Johnson will start at SS over Kovacs

5.) FS is a HUGE question mark... as is CB. I suspect it will be Robinson over Vinopal at FS, with Floyd and Woolfolk as the starting CBs (Avery as the Nickleback)

The 2012 recruiting class may be Michigan's most highly rated class in a long time... as long as Hoke can pull off 7-8 wins in 2011.

Agree, along with T. Gordon playing WLB behind M. Jones as well. I don't think Leach is anywhere near the 2 deep anymore to be honest. I think versatile guys like MRob, Furman, and Cam Gordon could be great weapons for Mattison, with their athleticism and ability to play both S and LB positions. Even Kovacs could fit this role, even though he isn't the athlete that the others are, but he is very strong with fundamentals and he finishes his tackles, which could help him move to spot duty at LB if others are covering the S positions.
