#15 Men's Lacrosse Hosts Rutgers 7PM **on BTN**

#15 men’s lacrosse hosts conference foe Rutgers tonight at 7PM at the State Street facility. The game will air on BTN. Michigan finishes its season on the road at Penn State and Ohio State so this is the last home game of the season, thus making it senior night (and creating an odd scenario in which lacrosse, supposedly a spring sport, is wrapping its home schedule before hockey has even finished its season).

Michigan is currently hovering on the fringes of at-large land and every win will help its chances.  But, Re-Tourney Quest: Return to the Tourney, Part II: The Sequel is back in jeopardy again after a frustrating loss against Hopkins last week in which Michigan jumped out to a fast lead and were looking really sharp. But the Jays woke up and took over and Michigan couldn’t put together any runs and were left dream-punching the rest of the game. Shooting was not great, and even some of M’s most reliable scorers missed on some clean looks, but it seemed like the 17 turnovers really cost them (although a few were a result of piss-poor officiating). Justin Wietfeldt was outstanding on faceoffs and at halftime M had a ridiculous 14-1 edge on draws…but trailed 8-7. The Harvard game seemed to follow this same pattern: Michigan appeared to dominate F/Os and ground balls but were trailing the whole game. Turnovers and poor shooting can nullify your other advantages. It seems like this team just hasn’t put it all together quite yet, but it certainly seems like it is capable of doing so.

Last week, I was remiss in not mentioning that senior attackman and Certified Program Good Guy Michael Boehm was on the verge of becoming Michigan’s all-time points leader. He broke that record on Saturday. This is a mark that was at one time held by his own brother-in-law, Trevor Yealy. Yealy was a key figure in their club dynasty and launch to the NCAA-level (and IIRC, was a legitimate D-1 recruit himself but chose Michigan). This means a lot to Mikey, so congrats to him! Meanwhile, Virginia’s Payton Cormier has pulled ahead of crease attackman Justin Tiernan in the national scoring race and is ahead by a goal at the moment so let’s root for some big games for JT down the stretch.

Simply put: this has to be a W for Michigan tonight. Rutgers isn’t terrible - and they have some legitimately great players - but they’ve fallen far from their 2022 Final 4 run. All of their W’s have come against teams currently .500 or below. The good teams they’ve faced this year: Army, Princeton, Hopkins and even Ohio State have handled them pretty easily. They’re likely headed for a last place finish in the league this season so Michigan really has to take care of business. If not, the at-large dream gets far more unlikely and they’ll have to grind for the AQ bid via the conference tournament. But this could certainly be a get-right game for them.

Go down and check it out and wish the seniors well. And GO BLUE!!

With under two minutes in the first quarter, Michigan has a significant advantage in shots (a 2:1 ratio), but, Michigan is down 4-2.

Go Blue!

The Rutgers goalie had a huge night. He seemed to get in the heads of Michigan's attacking players. Michigan sent a number of decent-to-good looks wide of the target, in addition to the goalie coming up with a litany of solid saves. Better shooting and less good opposing goaltending and it's a Michigan win, perhaps even a comfortable win.

Yeah. he had a pretty superb night. He was great. On the other end - Ross Scott's run of 3 straight goals in the first half was really impressive. Those were incredible shots; on the move, impeccably placed and with speed. Taylor had little chance.

Michigan has run into some hot goalies: UVA's Nunes, ND's Entenman and JHU's Ierlan; but I'm wondering how much of that is Michigan's poor shooting making them look good. The bad news is that PSU and OSU also have great goalkeepers. A 2nd half hat trick from John Morgan (what a good strong American name and I'm sure a fine young man) helped Michigan keep pace.

I'm also a little distressed that Justin Brown has been phased out of the offense lately. I don't know if he's dealing w/ an injury or if he's in the coaches' doghouse but he was key down the stretch last year. He has a decent outside shot - not the greatest placement but he definitely puts some stank on it - but he hasn't seemed to play at all lately. They've been getting little to no offense from the midfield, but Brown's speed can be a problem because he gets the defense to move, which is incredibly valuable, especially if you have a deadly crease attackman like Tiernan.

Beating Penn State would be a quality win and then a victory over the Buckeyes would bring them to 3-2 in the conference, which is nothing to sniff at. Another win or two in the tournament could help them make a strong case. But, there is no margin for error now.

Very good points all around. Much was made on the broadcast about Knobloch on Rutgers, and he appeared to live up to the hype. At least one of his goals was an exceptionally placed lefty rip, released on the run. Michigan did not have the same shooting precision yesterday.

I haven't the slightest clue what the deal is with Justin Brown, but I wonder if it has to do with decision-making in transition, offensively and/or defensively. Maybe coaches see him as a liability, either as a guy prone to turning the ball over or not preventing fast-breaks? Just a guess -- I haven't seen enough of his game to know. It certainly seems that the weakness of the team is offensive juice from the midfield, as you have suggested, and that Brown's dwindling PT is a head-scratcher.

The tourney auto-bid is always there .... but next week's U-M/PSU match is effectively an elimination game (for both teams) as regards serious at-large consideration.
