Michigan Hockey Game #36: Michigan 3, Michigan State 0
Note: Shot charts were a little inconsistent and incomplete tonight, so there are going to be some gaps in the numbers, unfortunately

Aside from the empty-netter, the only even strength goal was a coast-to-coast by Johnny Beecher, who actually didn’t get a shot off on the initial rush. He did circle back and beat a screened Lethemon to put Michigan up by two. Michigan also had some early flurries in front, forcing Lethemon to keep Michigan State in the game. Once it was 2-0, Michigan seemed to dial it back and play it safe, protecting Mann at all costs. Getting the lead is monumental for this team. They haven’t trailed since February 22nd.

Michigan looked to be just a bit better than last night. Obviously, I have very few numbers to back this up, but MSU only threatened a few times. It seemed like most of Mann’s saves were easier–except for a couple. State struggled all weekend to create anything Grade A. Michigan looked like Notre Dame for most of this weekend. After the Wolverines gained a plural goal advantage, it was all but done.

Just like Friday night, Michigan took control of this game with their power play. While their first man advantage didn’t score, they got the puck into dangerous situations and Lethemon had to make a couple big saves to keep the game even. On their second power play, Blankenburg ripped a shot from straight away that Lockwood got a stick on and broke the deadlock. Michigan used their third power play to kill two of the last eight minutes left in the third period…a good call.
Michigan only give up three man-advantages on Saturday. Their first penalty kill was basically flawless. State had a bit of zone time, but the Wolverines moved, switched, and tracked the puck and skaters perfectly. MSU had one attempt that went way wide. The second was a little better for MSU but not by much. The Wolverines didn’t allow a shot on the third Spartan power play. Absolute lockdown.

Strauss Mann backed up his Friday night shutout with another typical Mann performance on Saturday night: a shutout. After getting a friendly bounce from his post in the first period, Mann made a phenomenal kick save off of a give ‘n go from Dennis Cesana. That preserved the Wolverine single goal lead, giving Beecher a chance to put the game out of reach. The defense was very solid around him, but Strauss got enough of everything that they did not. In his duel with Lethemon, Mann showed “there can be only one.”

Michigan gave up their first couple OMRs of the weekend tonight. Luce stood his ground and blocked a 3v2 shot to the corner. York had a puck jump over his stick leading to a 2v1, but Strauss Mann made a nice positional save. Other than that, Michigan was very safe in transition. They did not create any offensive OMRs.
FINAL CORSI NUMBERS
I had: not enough numbers, sadly.
www.collegehockeynews.com had: Michigan 41, Michigan State 50.
WOO HOO! Back to back shutouts! Strauss Mann is da MAN!
M-V-P! M-V-P!! M-V-P!!!
How well do the Corsi data correlate with winning?
Not very well. Hockey does not have anything nearly as accurate as SP+ for football or Kenpom for basketball.
