Projected Size of New Scoreboards

Submitted by Purkinje on

So David Brandon said that we might have new scoreboards next year. (http://detnews.com/article/20101212/SPORTS0201/12120344/1131/rss17) According to his statements, the new scoreboards he envisions will be "30-40% larger" and the "vast majority" of them would be the HD video screen.

Wondering what this would look like, I decided to do a little research. According to the University, the current scoreboards are 48' x 70' (3360 square feet), with 24' x 32' video screens (768 square feet.) (http://bentley.umich.edu/athdept/stadium/stadtext/stad1998.htm)

I did some calculations based on the "40% bigger" number, and came up with the size of the new scoreboards to be 47' x 92' (4368 square feet.) This is a pretty massive increase in size, especially considering that nearly all of that would be an HD video screen. Basically, picture an HD screen as big as the current scoreboards plus 1,000 additional square feet... The increase in size from our current video screens to the new ones would be 568%.

My projection puts us at #7 on the list of scoreboards by size. Texas is still almost twice as big as that. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_scoreboards_in_NCAA_colleg…)

Here's hoping.

A From Michigan AD David Brandon: Pretty huge. If you picture the size of those (current) scoreboards and maybe something that's 30 percent larger, 40 percent larger, but then the entire surface or at least the vast majority of the surface would be video screen. I think those scoreboards look wimpy now with this structure and then the fact the HD video portion is only about a third of the surface. We can't do what our fans want us to do in terms of showing them really high-resolution replays, game action and even a lot of the marketing stuff we're doing with videos and pre-game and halftime shows — these screens are just not acceptable. This is very old technology, and they don't look very good, either. Think 30 or 40 percent larger and think big-image area for high-definition resolution screens. I think our fans will love it.

The current scoreboard at Michigan Stadium just doesn't have a small screen but it is pretty faded from the inside. I would even be cool with them leaving them the same size and just making the entire upper part a screen.

I'm more excited about the fact Yost will have a video screen. Now they can show replays on goals which only the people behind the penalty box can see. This may be a stretch but I think a real screen would add to the home ice advantage when it comes to penalties. Sometimes the refs miss a penalty (ha ha!) but when you show it on the screen maybe you get a call to go your way later on?
