Does Brian Kelly take a shot at D-Rob here?

Submitted by M.I.Sicks on

I've listened to this soundbite a few times and I believe Kelly is taking a shot at D-Rob in this presser. Starting at the 1:48 mark a reporter asks Brian Kelly "How do you rattle a QB making his first road start, do you concern yourself with that?" Kelly responds "Not in the offense that they run, Their offense is obviously set to run the football." Then he basically says well he'll (Denard) throw the football 5 or 10 yards. Calls them "containable throws". Also says "If you fall asleep on him he can put the ball over your head". Then he goes on to say "the point I'm making is he's a Running Back"

Am I reaching here? Or is this guy trashing our QB?

Hell of a running back if he can go 19-22 against a team that beat ND last year if I recall correctly.  Whether the Irish win or lose one thing is for sure, Kelly will never stop running his mouth.  He is a poor mans Lane Kiffin when it comes to his mouth.

ND has going for them that UCONN did not was they have got the game tape of last weeks win.  UCONN was not nearly ready for what DR and coach Rod laid on them.

ND will be a lot better prepared for it.   That being said....it does not mean they will be able to stop us.

... you're looking at it the wrong way. It's the little things like this that make him a good coach, he's not bashing denard as much as he is trying to build confidence in his own players. He knows denard can throw, and he's probably watched the highlight tapes more than we have. Im not saying that this will make the defense shut him down, but they will most likely play better than they would have if he came out saying they have no chance.

In Rich Rod's recent pressers, you can really sense an air of confidence of what he is seeing in his team this year ( you can also sense that in the kids as well). And I think Rich knows what he is looking for in order to run his brand of offense. I didn't catch that so much with Kelly in this video clip. (Damaging band instruments??? LOL. Sounds a lot like Claussen throwing it away after getting rushed a little - some things never change I  guess)

I could give a flying $%^& if Denard continues to throw the bubble screen behind the line of scrimmage, or throws the 5 or 10. He's dead nuts on, either with some zip or with pretty good finesse. Absolutely loved the fact that we had long, time consuming marches down the field for the scores - it kept our D on the sidelines a little longer, and they stayed fresh instead of gassed like they were last year. Yep, contain us all the way down the field.

Speaking of gassed.....it didn't look to me like Denard was the least bit winded at any point in the game against UConn - even after racking up those amazing passing and running stats.

People think there is no way that he'll out-do what he did last Saturday..... I happen to think he's only getting started. The more our OLine and D gels as a team/unit, the better this team is going to look - this season and what follows. The Team, The Team, The Team.

What I wouldn't give to be in that stadium on Saturday.......whoooooooo!

being from cincinnati, i know that kelly doesnt hold anything back when he talks. that being said, he comes off as a good guy but he really seems like hes a dick behind the scenes. if anything i hope denard and RR see this as an opportunity not to throw, which im sure kelly is expecting, but to run it down their throat and show him that it doesnt matter what he thinks, it matters what our offense can do. I cant wait for this game

....and from watching brian kelley at GVSU,CMU and CINNCY...I think he kinda knows what he's talking about. Brian Kelley is a good coach and i think he and his coaching staff will try to come up with a sly-scheme to try to stop D ROB.  Having said that, this video is certainlly not a "shot" at him

HOWEVA, if his main point to try to stop denard is to "hit him and tackle him" well....then good luck.  I'm confident that DROB will show his arm in this game .  Not to mention his wheels as well.  But..... yeah...have fun trying to contain him ND

i dont feel he is taking a shot at shoelace but i just get a weird feeling about this guy... I just feel like he's a cocky S.O.B. that needs to prove a bit more before he can walk around struttin like he already has been.

How dare he call Denard "very accurate," and imply that our offense makes it difficult to rattle our quarterback, and imply further that Denard is very difficult to tackle....

Who does this guy think he is?!

His strategy as he laid it out is to 1) put alot of points on the board (which I think every team has this goal in mind)  and 2) tackle Denard Robinson.  Both of these two goals are much easier said than done.  So when you take what he said, I just think he was being honest about his strategy against us.  I don't think he was trashing D Rob at all.  If anything I think he was giving D Rob and us alot of respect, which I'm sure he'll have more of at about 7 PM on Saturday.  Go BLUE!!

I almost hate to give Kelly credit for this (because I don't really care for him), but he said something here that the vast majority of Michigan fans have failed to understand heretofore about the offense that Rich Rodriguez runs: the quarterback IS a running back and needs to be a running back for this system to work properly.  It is far more important that the quarterback in this system be able to run like a "true" running back than pass like a "true" quarterback.

It's Denard's first start in a rivalry game on the road, things are definitely not going to be as easy for him as they were last week...

That being said, I'm a lot less worried about him producing than I am about our defense holding ND's offense under control.  Bend but don't break worked well last week but I'm not sure it will work as well against a far more talented offense.  Hopefully we can put Crist on his ass and create some turnovers.
