New Field and Endzone Styling

Submitted by biakabutuka4ever on

So with the new turf being installed in the Big House, something that has been bothering me for awhile came back up in my mind.  I have always liked endzones that are fully colored with the teams colors and I've always hoped the would be done at home.

Currently, we just "Michigan" written in the endzone with the background being grass.  I've always preferred how its done at the bowl games with "Michigan" written in maize with a blue background.  For example:

I am hoping they will make the change this time around.  But I'm not optimistic.  Anybody else feel the same way?

Fieldturf is supposed to look like real grass (in most cases). If you look at kinnick or Ohio stadium for recent examples of going with fieldturf and filling the endzones with team colors, the fakeness really comes out. With UM's natural background look the grass appearance remains entact. ...you took the center-bar portion of the trademark, and made that the endzone artwork?  I'm not suggesting the entire logo go anywhere on the field (I'm more of a plain "M" kind of patron), but at least that funky bar across the M might mean something in the future if we actually put it on the field.  We'd then have a name for it; it would make it our "touchdown" logo, as opposed to the plain "Block M."

My friend,

I know this thread is a little old, and to most this might seem so trivial (I must admit here to being somewhat of a nerdy amateur graphics enthusiast), but I had to tell you I'm so glad someone out there feels the same regarding this topic. I have no idea why the official logo font is not used on its own for official school use, apparel, etc. I mean the thing is, it's always been there, right under everyone's nose! I think to most it probably seems too simple or boring (or they've just never really looked at it) but I personally would find its use subtly distinctive, classic, and confident.

See I don't know about you, but for me, I will NEVER forget the first and only time I saw it used on its very own. And in case you don't know, here's the reason I will never forget it:

There are several pics to scroll down on the site before you get to it, but trust me, you'll know when you get to it. Click on it to make it bigger. Unmistakable. Perfectly sized. I always thought it looked so damn cool. And the game wasn't too bad either! It was my senior year.

But seriously, I like the way they are now and those endzones work great for the bowl games but I'm not so sure if a change is really necessary. It took a while getting used to Ohio State's new endzones and the new "O" on the 50, but now it seems normal to me (not that I like it any more or less than the previous look)...I guess the same could be true for us?

...but I liked the 1968 endzone.  There were alternating maize and blue stripes, at a 30-45 deg angle to the goal line.  The stripes were very wide, probably 15ft wide, and were angled toward the nearest sideline, creating a triangle in the middle of the endzone.  As I remember, the triangle was blue, with a maize block M in the middle.  I looked for a picture, but didn't find one.  I think I remember seeing a picture of Ron Johnson at Schembechler Hall that included the endzone - and there's probably a picture at Bentley.

Opposing teams will be scared to cross the goal line, and our own boys will get there twice as fast.

Actually, about ten years ago during a pilgrimage out to AA, I bought a framed picture of the 97 Rose Bowl, with our endzone all decked out in maize and blue with 'Michigan' in that classic late '90's Futura Bold.  I'd be down for that.

I agree with you on the fact that the Maize "Michigan" with the Blue backround appeals to me more, but I think they stick with the traditional michigan endzone because, well, Michigan just likes tradition above all. this was the way they did it even back when Bo was coaching, plus all that blue chalk would take away from our already limited recruiting scholarships >_<

The new turf grass is going to be a TON brighter than the turf we had the last 5-6 years.  There was a thread on it awhile back - they did a contrast with the current M and it looks 90% brighter than the old block M.  It should look really clean.

The current endzone with the current font, but every green part would be filled in with the blue that currently outlines the maize letters. I think it would give the field a good contrast from the normal green playing field. It would be classy just like the uniforms. I am all for it. I think all endzones should be in color though, It isn't as much for Michigan since the letters are so big and take up most of the space, but if you look at a field like the Lions, a small font with a green background that is the majority of the endzone does not look as good IMO (especially when your colors are not green).

I'm fine with it the way it is.  Bowls are supposed to be garish, over-the-top spectacles.  In the regular season you do things the traditional way.

how about a larger M at midfield, blue background with maize michigan lettering in the endzones and a multi dark green light green field kind of what oregon has. i think that would pretty cool. would look even better under the lights of The Big House
