OT: anyone with any info on torn ligaments in the ankle?

Submitted by Monkey House on
Hey I was looking for a little help from anyone that might have had a similar injury or anyone in the medical field that might have some insight. I recently rolled my left ankle pretty badly and had a MRI yesterday. It came back that I tore the ligament on the top of my ankle that runs from the top of my foot to my leg. I guess my question is does this always required surgery? How long is the recovery? Any info or tips on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Had similar injury 5 yrs ago. I had sx and I have had a full recovery, but haven't played soccer since. Can't be missing that much work.

Anyway, most people do not require sx. My talus became unstable.
My ATFL was torn, as well as my peroneus brevis and peroneus longus

I dunno, my experience is entirely limited to:

1. A bad but improperly diagnosed sprain in elementary school that wound up permanently limiting my left ankle's range of motion, and

2. A sudden, unplanned, catastrophic attempt to increase that range of motion by slipping on ice and falling directly on top of that ankle several years ago, breaking it in multiple places.

My advice: what those guys said. Don't do what I did; I still have a plate & 9 screws as souvenirs.

Tore the talofibular ligament when I fractured my ankle playing intramural football 30 years ago.  Ankle still bothers me.  10 weeks in a cast, 3 months of PT, now full of arthritis and a couple bone spurs that need to be removed.

Worst part was the screw they took out that went across the ankle, probably 3-4 inches.  Bone grew around it and hurt like a MFer when they took it out.  Could hear bone cracking.

What you describe is the definition of a sprained ankle. You don't need surgery, and stay away from anyone who says you do. Atfl tear will heal on its own.

and was in a cast for 6 weeks, then physical therapy.  Never had a surgery.  I'm totally fine today.

Of course, I was in high school when I injured it, so my body seemed to heal much faster then.

I think it's referred to as reverted. and I've done it bad on both ankles. and both were black and blue on the outside. and they healed fine. 8 months and was good as new
