There is a nice uncrowded beach north of Muskegon that I have gone to since I was a kid in the 60s. State Park or the the County park or somewhere in between is all good. THen a burger at Bear Lake Tavern.
Growing up in northern Michigan, I had no idea how lucky I was. I thought everyone sailed in the summer and skied in the winter. I'm now living in the concrete jungle of Dallas, but try to get home whenever I can (and will be back for the spring game!). People in Texas have no clue how beautiful Michigan is. Here are some tips from a (former) local:

Depends where you live.
Grand Rapids/Lansing/Chicago = Holland, Grand Haven
Kalamazoo = South Haven
Metro Detroit/Chicago/NYC/Ohio = Traverse City, Harbor Springs/Petoskey/Charlevoix, Torch Lk.
Traverse City is world class and where I'd park my money if I were to buy a vacation place.

Ludington is my favorite place especially the state park we camp there every year it was voted best state park in the midwest there is alot to do there. You can also watch the SS Badger which is a pretty cool thing to see as well.

LELAND aka fish town is beautiful and definitely worth checking out. All of Northwest Michigan is just beautiful.
Smaller beach towns Pentwater, Frankfurt, Empire, Manistee, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs and Cross Village (Legs Inn) are a few I've visited and enjoyed.
Outdoors spots (camping, beaches, dunes) Michigan Rec area between Ludington and Manistee is great (bring your cooler and dog and enjoy the beach), Platt River (camping, canoe/tube to Lake Michigan then enjoy great views of Sleeping Bear), Empire Dunes (right on the lake, climb dunes and run down to the lake), Sleeping Bear, wineries and breweries in TC and Mission point, tunnel of trees between Harbor Springs and Cross Village.
That should get you close to St. Ignace.

This was a great post.
Just found out I will be in Ludington in early September. Any recommendations on hotels? Wanted something close to the main area of town if possible but short drive is fine. Will be with my wife and basically just wanted to enjoy the area restaurants, bars, downtown, etc.
