He did not speak about his experiences to us, but did express to our mother how difficult it was going back to Michigan when so many of his classmates and fraternity brothers did not return.

SaigonBlue is not military related at all. I lived and worked there for a long time, so I chose it as a username to reflect my geographical positioning when I joined the site.

I have a suggestion for you. If you haven't seen it, get a copy of the PBS show entitled "Carrier." It was ten episodes, an hour each, with a film crew embedded on the USS Nimitz. Fascinating show. You can actually watch it on the internet if you want.

Here is a link:  http://www.pbs.org/weta/carrier/

My wife and I absolutely loved watching this with our kids. It gave us a sense of what our oldest daughter had gotten herself into.

If your dad is still alive, he probably watches some TV, and this would be something he might enjoy quite a bit.

My father-in-law flew C-47's in WWII. The scariest part for him was flying at 500 or so feet and dropping paratroopers at Normandy and for Market Garden, with the flack exploding all around. My grandfather flew in WWI. Things were very different then . . . he actually had a coffee can of shrapnel to dump over the side to try and deter pursuing planes. I can only imagine what your dad went through. In fact, there is a helicopter pilot from my church who is currently deployed to the gulf. Exhilarating and terrifying.
