Totally OT - Things to do in Dubuque, IA

Submitted by CJRockford on

I'm making the drive from Grand Rapids to Iowa this weekend to visit the Field of Dreams movie site.  Renting a convertible and taking my 6 year old daughter with me.  Along the way we are going to stop in Chicago for lunch and to go to the observation deck in Willis (Sears) tower.  I've always wanted to see if, but until 2 years ago I lived in Tampa, FL so I wasnt willing to make quite that long of a drive for it.

We should be in Dubuque, IA by 3 or 4pm on Saturday and will be visting the movie site on Sunday to see the Ghost Players emerge from the corn for a game.  Just wondering if anyone knows of anything else worth seeing in the area.

Like others said, stay in Galena. Dubuque stinks. The Field of Dreams site is amazing though. Get there early when they open so u have things to yourselves.

It might not be the same for you depending on the technology and device you use, but the last time I was in the Loop (3-4 years ago), my GPS was pretty hit and miss because of the tall buildings and how close together some of the streets are.  It might not be as much of an issue now, but I had better luck navigating without electronic aid.

Dyersville is also the home of Ertl Toys, which makes it, more or less, the Farm Toy Capital of the World.  The 10-year-old version of BlueAggie was super geeked to tour the Ertl factory.  As a 31-year-old I can see where this was something of an odd obsession.  Your mileage may vary.

A long road trip in a convertible is overrated. You will want to put the top on by the first rest stop. Your 6 year old won't remember the trip. But spending time is a good thing. Iowa. I don't know, man. Any aquariums near your house? Kids love aquariums.
