OT - Ronda Rousey wins UFC 184 Title Fight in 14 Seconds

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

I barely watch UFC at all, but this seems very impressive. Ronda Rousey beat previously undefeated Cat Zingano in just 14 seconds to win UFC 184.

Apparently it's the fastest ever submission in a UFC TItle Fight.

Her last three fights have lasted less than 2 minutes...combined.

I think I want her on my team when the zombie apocalypse comes.

Essentially the whole point of Judo is to throw or otherwise takedown the opponent and then submit them.  And Rousey won an Olympic medal in Judo.  So doing anything where you end up copmletely off-balance and in a position where Rousey can throw you is just idiotic.

It reminds me of watching men's MMA when Brazillian Jiu Jitsu just dominated everything.  No one could fight those guys because they would just take everyone down to the ground and basically wrestle/grapple them to death.  You just couldn't fight them on their terms.  Of course, they didn't win in 14 seconds, but the win was just as inevitable.

You can't fight Rousey on her terms and expect to not get pummelled.

Or fight a step up. I don't know if a woman her size can reasonably get to 135. It's like Hearns saying he's willing to fight Foreman, but only as a middleweight. I don't think Rousey or her handlers really want to risk that fight, and why should they?

Cyborg would have to come down to 135 for the fight to happen.

Ronda can't go up a weight class because there is no 145lb weight class in the UFC and they have no plans to start one because it's a horribly weak weight class. A lot of the girls fighting at 145 are blown up 135ers. For example, Marloes Coenen is ranked #2 in the world behind Cyborg at 145 and she's most famous for being the Strikeforce 135lb champion.

It's just an incredibly stupid idea to have Cyborg come over to the UFC and either fight Ronda at a catch-weight or 145. If Cyborg wins, what then? She's not the champion because no belt was on the line. She can't keep fighting in the UFC because there is no 145lb weight class, so she just leaves. Plus, now Ronda looks like shit and the UFC has just totally devalued the 135lb belt and their entire 135lb women's division.

If Cyborg wants to fight Ronda it's going to have to be at 135lbs. There are just no two ways around it.

The only other way I could potentially see that fight happening is if Ronda announced she was retiring and wanted it to be her last fight, so she'd give up the belt and they'd do it as a one off special attraction, but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.

The problem with her being on your team in the zombie apocalypse is I think her style of fighting gets her bit. That said, watching her tear heads off instead of arms would be kinda cool.

hate watching women fight. it's not what they should be doing.

And no, Rousey wouldn't beat 50% of the men in the same class like some clowns are saying.  I'm not sure she'd win 10% of the matches.  The physical differences between men and women are just too much, even for an 'elite' women like Rousy.  Same thing happens in most women's sports; women's college bball team gets beat by a good boys HS team.  Or the Swedish women's national soccer team got shutout 3-0 by a 10 player U-17 local boys team.

Your opinion on WMMA is dumb.

I agree with you about fighting dudes. First of all, it's all promotional hype from Dana White and Joe Rogan. They don't really believe she should fight men inside of the octagon.

People are getting a little too crazy with regard to what Ronda can do. She's pretty clearly the best women's fighter on the planet (well above Cyborg, IMO), but she also has a ton of built in advantages over the other girls.

Thie first one being that she was effectively trained in martial arts since birth by a mother who is a legend in the judo community. Most other girls in the sport get into it later in life and don't build the prerequisite skill base in order to compete at a high level. They just get thrown in there because WMMA is so shallow.

Another thing that cannot be overstated is the fact that there isn't that much money in WMMA and so most girls can't train full time. They either have to work at the gym where they train or get a side job to help pay the bills and fund their MMA career. Ronda, on the other hand, is a millionaire with virtually unlimited resources for her camp. If she wants to fly in some Thai boxers from Thailand, she's doing that. If she wants to spend part of her fight camp in Glendale (where she's based out of), and then fly to Canada or Holland and stay there for a month to work with a different set of coaches, she can do that.

MMA is her full time job. It's also why she keeps getting better and better and leaving all of the other girls behind. Even if they have the same drive, they simply don't have the resources.

If she were to go over to the men's side, pretty much all of those advantages would disappear, and she would obviously be at a ridiculous physical disadvantage, even if her skills were on par with the men.

This is what she would be up against in the men's 135lb division:

There aren't any women MMA fighters who look or move like that.

The women's division is extremely weak. They are already having trouble finding compelling matchups for her. The next fight will either be the 3rd matchup with someone she's beaten 2x already (Tate) or the boxer that made her (unimpressive) debut last weekend, Combs.

I watched it streaming live and it didn't freeze or skip at all. That never happens so I think the interest is already waning. At least when Silva or GSP were dominating there was enough quality in the division to make the fights interesting to watch.

I also am not a fan of always getting a submission by an arm bar. Give me a good round house kick, devastating body blow, or choke hold once in a while....

Ronda is clearly the class of the field and good for her but if I am spending money I want something more entertaining and longer bouts.
