Question about Tim Tebow

Submitted by TwoFitty on
I know the media loves him, I know he is all they talk about. But why does everyone on this board hate him? I believe he is one of the best college football players ever, definitely the best I've seen. even before all the accolades this year, 2 NC's, 1 heisman, maybe one more of each. leading rusher in SEC history, as a QB. But what impresses me most about TT is what kind of a man he is. regardless of your religious views Tim Tebow is one of the most mature, upstanding young men to ever play at the level that he has. As far as I'm concerned the world and the NCAA need more Tim Tebows. He is the kind of man I want as a role model for my children. I just do not understand the anomosity towards him on this board. ?

I'm sorry, Tim Tebow doesn't and never has carried "90% of the load" on Florida's offense. Guys like Percy Harvin, Chris Rainey, Andre Caldwell, Cornelius Ingram, Louis Murphy, and Aaron Hernandez have always been equal parts of the Florida offense success. Tim Tebow has always had great statistical success because he has been surrounded by incredible talent. Just look at his first two TD passes yesterday. Hernandez took a 20 yard shuffle pass to the house after half the defense overran the play (Tebow was involved, but most QB's would have made that play). Hernandez then took a middle screen about 50 yards for a TD. Both plays look tremendous in the stat line, but had very little to do with Tebow being "great." In fact, Tebow's first TD run, came off the same play as the shuffle pass and the DE in position to hit Tebow was so afraid of the shuffle pass that he blew his assignment to make sure Hernandez couldn't get the ball. Every QB gets statistical benefits from plays like this, but I would argue most don't get nearly as many of big plays off the legs of their receivers. Throw in the fact that Tebow is Florida's only goal line option, and it's no wonder his stats are as phenomenal as they are. The point from this is, Florida has so many varied weapons on offense (Tebow on inside running game, a game changer TE, deep threat wide-outs, and quick-ninja type WR/HB hybrids that are great in space) that it forces defenses to simplify and spread out to attempt to cover anything. This leads to easy passes, defensive breakdowns, and a generally explosive offense. Tim Tebow is an excellent cog in this system, but I don't think that makes him "the greatest of all time." In fact, in my mind, Percy Harvin was the most valuable offensive player of that team the last three years, and I find it no coincidence, that their offense took a huge step back when he turned pro.

I'm sure he's a good guy, and it's not his fault the media fawns over him. I don't hate him. I do hate the media for fawning over him, though. I want Florida to lose each week just so the endless chatter will stop.

Hes a solid football player, but hes surrounded by great athletes and future nfl players, not to mention always having a defense that is forcing 3 and outs/turnovers. Sure he smiles and praises the lord when hes on camera, but no one on here knows what hes like off camera. He was just the perfect fit for the perfect system, and in my eyes, he is not one of the best college players of all time. Not by a long shot.

He either has made Urban Meyer or Urban Meyer has made him we will find out soon enough, that said he has been an extremely good citizen for four years that is kind of nice in this day and age.

We will find out how good Tebow was. If Florida becomes just a good (not great) team without him, then he deserves all the credit. If Florida keeps rolling along, it's a pretty good indication that Tebow was just one member of a great team -- not the reason they were a great team.

OP I agree w/ you 100%. I used to hate Tebow and honestly it was because of the media hype and b/c of his association w/ Meyer. What's ironic, though, is it's become trendy on this board to hate Tebow, and people cite the media love as a major reason why. Yet, the collective disdain for Tebow on this board embodies the very same type of groupthink that is criticized in regards to the media. Ironic, no? Personally Tebow has really grown on me and as much as a certain part of me hates to admit it, I'm a fan. There, I'm out of the closet now. There's so much shit in our society, and goodness that seems to have an ulterior motive or an agenda behind it, and here's a kid that is positive, does a lot of good in the world, excels on the football field, and loves what he does. Watching the guy and giving him a fair chance, it's hard *not* to like him. I like the guy and find him to be an inspiring person. I hope he gets the Heisman and leads Florida to an MNC this year... not b/c I like Florida (because I don't) but because I like Tebow.
