I suspect his sudden downfall is due to a few things.
First, as has been reported in the media, his coaching staff couldn't get hired at a good high school. He has a couple family members on it, neither of whom ever coached before. I am sure every halfway-decent assistant coach has steered clear of UL because, well, Petrino. Why hitch yourself to that sure-disaster.
Second, I'm going to guess, the payments that went to UL basketball players weren't ONLY going to basketball players. I'm also guessing that's all stopped, and starve the football team of just a handful of key recruits at skill positions, and suddenly it tanks.

What happened to Petrino? I know he's a garbage human being, but he's always been a good coach. Why is Louisville so bad?
