Ricky Barnum deals with graduation, fatherhood (Warning: Freep Content)

Submitted by M-Wolverine on

Holiday article on Ricky Barnum's trails freeing up, his family, playing time challenges, schooling, and making a better life for his daughter. It's in the Free Press so don't click if you don't want, it's fair, but this was one of those cases where my love for the players overrides my disdain for all things Snyder and Freep.

I recall when I was in middle school my grandfather had a "No scab papers" sign in his yard. He had been a newspaper guy in a former life. Not to get too into the details of it all, but that whole period in the 90's seriously changed the culture at the Freep and the Detroit News. A lot of the management and staff turned over. It clearly had a long-term impact on the standards at the Free Press.

...about the value of family and hard work. Congrats to Ricky for his successes on and off of the field. Clearly he has a ton to play for next Tue. I look forward to seeing him tear up the Gamecocks DL.

While I don't understand some of this site's overreactions to things -- piped in music, uniforms, Brady Hoke hire -- I believe the feeling towards the Freep is 100% justified.  This news establishment carried out a personal vendetta against a coach and failed to meet even the lowest of ethical standards for journalism.  Read the Freep if you want, but remember what the editors of that paper tried to do to the program we hold dearly.

The article on Barnum was very insightful about Ricky, his family, and his choices at Michigan, academic and otherwise.

As regards the Free Press, I would note several things:

  1. This article was very positive in the coverage on Barnum.
  2. While somewhat of a positive fluff piece, there was new information in the article I haven't seen written about anywhere else.
  3. I respect the right of individuals not to link to an article at the Free Press.
  4. Former MGoBlog contributer Tim Sullivan has recruiting articles published by the Free Press.
  5. The primary perpetrator at the Free Press, Michael Rosenburg, is no longer with the Free Press.
  6. I would hope, as with many other things in life, that those MGoBlog readers who choose to boycott the Free Press would respect the different choice of other MGoBlog readers.
