Iowa's O'Keefe to the NFL, replacing both OC and DC at Iowa

Submitted by iawolve on
Per the Des Moines Register, O'Keefe is going to coach for the Dolphins with Philbin who he worked with at Iowa. Interesting to see how this plays out replacing the OC, DC and DL coach for next year. Funny how this comes out right after signing day. Not very gentlemanly... http://hawkcentral.com/2012/02/03/offensive-coordinator-ken-okeefe-is-l…

It seems a bit douchey to do it right after  NSD for some reason. Regardless, the Hawkeye fanbase is very broken up about it, as you can see. They all seem to be bailing on Ferentz, don't they? Does anyone know who they have been looking at for DC and DL?

You win with players.  When you have Robert Gallery and Fred Russell, those off-tackle playcalls look like pure genius.  When your top four RB have their legs explode and your o-line isn't full of first round picks, then suddenly the guy calling plays is a dumbass.

I think Ferentz suffers from a lot of the criticism Carr got which stems from the fact that fans think coaches can win tons of games by being smarter or more aggressive than the opposition.  Nick Saban's defense isn't any different than anybody else's, he just has a ton of great players.  Chip Kelly wouldn't be as smart without LeMichael James and DeAnthony Thomas taking it to the house every time there is a crack in the defense.  Any coach with a lengthy resume is going to have ups and downs due to some combination of injuries or recruiting missteps.

If Iowa fans are grumbling, I'd be more than happy if they switched places with Minnesota and saw what that was like for a while.

O'Keefe never impressed me as a play-caller. Certainly not NFL material.

It's amazing how often new head coaches want to surround themselves with friends.

Auburn has 6 OL recruits already, Iowa's program is falling apart with no staff stability (one of the old selling points) it is hard to know what could happen there,

At a huge position of need, Kozan could start day 1, to me this is an easy choice, hopefully he arrives at the same conclusion.

Iowa has had a knack for getting OL drafted. This year, for instance, they've got a guy who was a low 3-star projected to go in the top 10. Anything to break up the staff capable of doing that on a consistent basis will be good for our OL recruiting.
