Advice Requested - OSU quandary

Submitted by yvgeni on
As some of you may or may not know, I throw together some photoshop wallpapers every now and then and dabble in the occasional MGoblog banner contest.* Anyway, I receive good feedback and requests every so often via email, but the most recent one has me really in a quandary. An OSU fan emailed with what seemed honest praise out of nowhere. He was very polite. I thanked him for his kind words and thought that was that. He then responded again, and asked if I would do an Ohio State wallpaper and if so, how much I would charge... So can you see my dilemma. He wants to pay, it's easy enough for me to do, but I just can't seem to bring myself to even think about doing it. The thought of staring at those putrid colors for hours makes me queasy... Am I stupid or just ridiculous? (*curse you Cook for taking away my greatest summer pleasure)

with those who have advised you to do it, and do it for free (as long as there is no cost to you). While I am clearly aware that there are OSU fans that are complete dicks, I am also realistic enough to acknowldge that there are UM fans out there that are idiots as well(see comments advising you to send a virus in the wallpaper). In the recent past I have come to find a few OSU fans that can actually talk logically about football without their overbaring fan bias getting in the way and it is nice to see. I would wager that we have a lot more of these asshole fans that we criticize the Bucks for having than any of us realize. We are rivals, no doubt, but we can also be the bigger (or in this case more respectful and decent) person and treat them no different than we would anyone else...... Do it, and do a damn fine job.

When he painted the Last Judgment, he illustrated the Pope's Master of Ceremonies in hell, because this guy was a toolbag. Perhaps you could do something similar if you take the job... a hidden "Easter egg" if you will... except, more like rabbit scat.

My money comment was only half in jest. I do some design and copywriting freelance work, and you'd be amazed at how hard it can be to get people to pay you for your time. Even after signing a simple contract that lays out fees, changes, etc. getting paid can be a nightmare. Those of you who provide less tangible services probably already know this, but many people really don't like paying for creative work, they need something concrete in their hands, especially in this economy. If it isn't going to cost you anything (except for time you're willing to spend) I'd do it for free. You'll feel better for yourself, and the good karma might mean one less urine filled beer cup thrown on a michigan fan.

if you don't need the money, tell him that you will create something for him in exchange for a $25 donation to Mott Hospital. If you're not dealing with an ass, he'll donate, and you'll feel better about it.
