Best Player to Wear #92
This is the weakest number so far, at least in terms of web available statistics. There are three names worth mentioning: Fred Grambau, DT, 1969-72 who was a 5th round pick of the Chiefs, Dan Rumishek, LB, 1998-02 who now plays Arena League Football and for some reason that I cannot verify with any sort of Google stalk goodies, Misopogon has Steve Evans, LB, 1992-95 listed as the best player on the list. Here it is, you decide:
92 Ritter, Charles T 1952
92 Cowan, Keith T 1957
92 Lazik, Arthur E 1958
92 Wynn, Philip D. FB 1959
92 McAleer, Patrick E 1962-64
92 Fette, Thomas E 1963-4
92 McLaughlin, David E 1965
92 Wilhite, James OHB 1966-68
92 Grambau, Fred DT 1969-72
92 Koschalk, Richard A. MG 1973-75
92 DeSantis, Mark DE 1976-77
92 Coles, Cedric DT 1979-81
92 McConville, Jim OLB 1982
92 Roberts, Scott TE 1982
92 Gray, Joe MG 1983-84
92 Cooper, Keith OLB 1985-87
92 Feaster, Curtis LB 1986
92 Evans, Mike DT 1990-91
92 Evans, Stephen LB 1992-95
92 Brandt, David DL 1996
92 Stock, Chad PK 1996-97
92 Rumishek, Dan RLB 1998-02
92 Paul, William DE 2003-05
92 Banks, Greg DE 2006-08
92 Olesnavage, Jason PK 2006-08
Can I defer to the second half...or at least until #91?
I have a feeling that most of the names on this list were mostly back ups...but they did make the team and wear a number...more than most of us achieved in our football careers...
We're trying to pick the greatest player to ever wear a number at UM, not give a hug to a back-up. Who cares if they we're better than a bunch of blog readers?
While granted that in the end a name will be settled on as to who is the best to wear the number, this is in part a exercise in history, nostalgia and yes at times, a way to "give a hug." There are few numbers where there are no obvious standouts and that gives some Wolverine who was not great, but compared to his team mates merely above average, as chance to be remembered for the time and effort they put in to make this program great. There are a lot of guys who toiled as back ups wearing Maize and Blue who could have been standouts at some smaller school, but instead chose to to play here in relative annonymity. So yeah, I am not above giving a hug or two out to the back ups.
Rumishek was more of a DE than a LB. He started for a couple of years, but wasn't really a standout (and those defenses weren't that great). I'll go with Grambau as the best (although I know very little about him) because he played on some outstanding defenses.
I would tend to agree and at this point am leading towards Grambau.
Mike Evans started for all 12 games in both 1990 & 1991. I remember his mop-up interception of an option pitch in the rain in Madison in 1988 (he may have been wearing a different number at the time...)
I am voting for Curtis Feaster who I do not recall. I do remember Rodney Feaster, so Curtis gets my vote, beasides the rest of the list is "famine".
The bolded guys are also the only ones who were on the team for four seasons. It's gotta be one of them... but hell I have no epinion beyond that
Grambau due only to the fact that he played on a great defence.
I think you've got Mike Evans and his younger brother Stephen mixed up in the bolding.
I'm embarassed to admit that I went to the Bentley M football site and checked the 1988 and 1989 team photos. Mike Evans is wearing 92 in both photos (not 61 as the rosters claim).
He was a 2 1/2 year starter on 4 conference champion teams. I think he is the hands down best on the list.
so I'll say Marcus Ray
Was good as an offensive lineman, but he must have changed numbers for that incarnation of his career. I'll vote for him.
