Team docs There are supposed to be official team doctors on the sidelines, not only medical trainers. Jeff Kutcher. A concussion specialist, is one of michigan's sideline docs, at least in theory. I didn't see Morris get much of an eval, but the team should have someone looking out for this type of scenario. Either the medical staff didn't (big problem) or Hoke didn't care (big problem).
Fire now or later? Hoke needs to go. Is there any con to firing him now? I mean, obviously a mid season firing of a coach means the program is a mess but a) it is and b) it is. I see the pros of doing so (the university saying it won't stand for wonton disregard of player safety, showing it won't settle for sloppy play, etc.). I'm not sure what the cons are, barring the "maybe we'll pull it together and have an awesome rest of the season, which seems unlikely. I'm sure there are some bigger negatives (probably something to do with coach hiring), but otherwise I'm not sure of the downside.
Thanks to both writers It may not be a popular opinion, but I appreciate the honesty you've been bringing the past two weeks. Well, I'm not sure I can call Heiko's post "honest," but it comes from an honest place. I don't think it is traitorous/unacceptable/dong punching/whatever to point out that this year's team has problems. It doesn't make you (or anyone) less of a fan to want more from this team. Isn't that what we always want? The best team possible?
Really Brady? I'm not sure insulting all the students at the University is really a great decision. Even if only undergrads were upset (they're not), that is still a big freakin' deal. And as a 30-year old who also questions the state of the program, Hoke's comments on the issue are both ignorant and insulting. I know the available HC options out there aren't great but I am so over this shit.
This time, in Raleigh...

Duke loses to Mercer. Very prophetic, this post.

How unfortunate Pasadenablue, you clearly read this blog and take part in this community. You have garnered a lot personal enjoyment from Brian's work. What has Brian gotten from you? Accusations of condoning (or at the very least ignoring) rape? Lets be honest: you're trolling. Maybe not on purpose. But you've got an agenda to push (for whatever reasons, right or wrong), and you're insulting everyone's intelligence. We get it. Rape still happens, for god only knows what terrible reasons. No one is saying we have to stand for it, or that it is 'right.' All people should be taught this, and need to hear it from time to time. You are free to comment as you like, as are the rest of us. Your self-righteousness is just spiritual egocentricity.
Unnecessarily dramatic Many things were done wrong (the incident itself, the coverup, the subsequent bungling of the expulsion with misleading statements vs outright lies), but if this is suddenly the end of the world, we've got to get our priorities straight. I'm less concerned about Hoke's comments than the prolonged silence afterwards. I'm not sure it is a coach's place to make broad public statements decrying his players, but it is certainly the responsibility of the university to be as transparent as possible. I'll give Hoke a pass, for now.
HE BUMPED ME

HE BUMPED ME IN THE NOSE.

Priceless. We had subs, it was crazy.

I think I agree with Gordon.

Remember, fandom of the Cornhuskers has made Women's Volleyball hugely popular in Nebraska. Now, no knock on women's volleyball, but that does point to how much people love them some UNL sports. The Omaha Lancers (also USHL) don't seem to affect UNO's hockey team much.

Not sure that's a bad thing

It's kind of the same thing, just with different names.

I'm originally from California, and sure, there's the large "University of California" system, but pretty much no one says "I went to the University of California. They say UCLA, Cal/Berkeley, UCDavis, UCIrvine, etc. If Central/Eastern/Western/Northern (poor Southern, no school to its name) Michigan were instead "University of Michigan: Ypsilanti" or something or other, they'd probably just start identifying themselves as "UMY" students, or something like that.

Also, California also has the Cal-State system, and the UC/Cal-State naming is strikingly similar to UofM/Michigan State (UC = flagship academic schools; Cal-State = nothing to shake a stick at, but less prestigious). The Cal-State system is traditionally seen as the "little brother" to the UC system, because it was designed to be undergraduate only, with the UC schools the sole public institution in California to get a doctorate or equivalent, while the state schools have been praised for its integration of "practical applications." These systems are kept distinctly seperate so as not to dilute their respective brands.

I think the U of M is very protective of its own brand and might not want to expand to other sites. It would lead to a distillation of top faculty, rivalries within the system, etc.

Good point, snarling wolverine

On one hand, Omaha and Lincoln are far enough away (1 hour, if driving conditions are favorable) that they wouldn't be at each other's throats for ice time/space. Also, graduates of the University of Nebraska - Omaha are typically proud of their institution and don't try to just say they when to "University of Nebraska" and pull a fast one. They're seperate entities (except for football, but UNO was never DI anyway) and it wouldn't be like if UM Dearborn decided to start a hockey team.

On the other hand, I'm not sure Nebraska is that into hockey. I'm not saying they're not into hockey, but most Nebraskans are content just rooting for UNO (from my experience in Nebraska, at least).

Next time you hear them complain, show them this;

Tom Izzo is a philistine. He's just mad he's a man of summer, and Stauskas just let him know that winter is coming.
Second side note If Dawson was mad BEFORE the game, maybe we made him break his other hand.
Asterisk Smashterisk ESPN agrees: no asterisk necessary. http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/93116/no-aste… Also, on a side note, there is no way in hell that I believe anyone breaks their hand slamming it on a table. He was either punching things in anger (similar idea to slamming your hand on a table, but more mentally unhinged), or he was doing something MSU would prefer to disguise.
Nebraska is totally gunning for... ...the title of third worst team in the Big Ten. Brownie points from me for beating OSU. I'm expecting big things (improvement to mediocrity) for Nebraska around 2020.
Big props to the players! I emerged from the game drenched in sweat, clutching a snuggie. I can only imagine how stressful it is to be a player right now. I'm going to get a second snuggie for the MSU game.
Read this before reading the post before. My reacting: "WHO GOT FIRED OMG...oh, just Borges. Okay heart, continue beating."
Maybe it's just because 2013 was awful... ...but with every win it seems like suddenly the sky has opened, angels are singing, and Charles Woodson is handing out hot cocoa and cronuts. I can't imagine how I'll feel if our hoops team beats someone legitimate.
Thanks! Awesome recommendation. Functional and for a great cause! If we still could give points, I'd give you one. (Edit: I did a Terrible job replying to the post I wanted to reply to. Fail. I was referring to the MGoBlue for Mott bracelets)
My wife got me... ...a finished wooden box engraved with the Block M! They wouldn't do it in maize and blue because they were worried about copyright infringement, so they did it in gold. I had also asked for a Michigan bracelet...kind of like the old 'livestrong' bracelets, but she had a hard time finding them; apparent Michigan only sells huge, thick ones that look like the bar bracelets that let everyone know you're old enough to drink. Don't suppose anyone on the site knows where I could get a normal sized one?
